Judge OK's 4-Week Settlement Extension in Dearborn McDonald's Halal Meat Lawsuit

A local franchise of the company was sued in 2011 for allegedly falsely claiming to sell halal meats to consumers.

The settlement period in a class action lawsuit against McDonald's and a local franchisee in Dearborn has been extended. According to the Associated Press, Wayne County Circuit Judge Kathleen Macdonald ruled on March 12 that the settlement period for those who ate chicken sandwiches that were falsely advertised as halal at two McDonald’s restaurants in Dearborn will be extended for another 28 days. On Jan 18, the company agreed to pay a $700,000 settlement after a Dearborn Heights man sued McDonald's in 2011 for false advertising and deception. “Halal” refers to meeting Islamic requirements for preparing food. God’s name must be invoked before an animal providing meat for consumption is slaughtered. The lawsuit covers anyone who ate the …

Dearborn Activist's Halal Chicken Lawsuit Gag Order Lifted

Lawyer Majed Moughni had been barred from commenting on a controversial decision regarding McDonald’s and non-Halal chicken.

A Dearborn attorney is loving a Wayne County judge’s decision regarding a lawsuit against McDonald's. Majed Moughni received good news from Judge Kathleen Macdonald, who reversed a decision she had made that prohibited Moughni from talking about a settlement reached between McDonald’s and attorneys over non-halal chicken served at a Dearborn fast-food restaurant, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press. Moughni was reprimanded by the court in February for starting discussion on the 4,821-member page about the lawsuit settlement, and ordered to take the discussions down. The judge’s earlier decision also had effectively shut down a Facebook page run by Moughni, a 42-year-old local activist. But now the Facebook page—Dearborn Area …

McDonald's to Pay $700K in Dearborn Halal Meat Lawsuit

A local franchise of the company was sued in 2011 for allegedly falsely claiming to sell halal meats to consumers.

McDonald's and a local franchisee have agreed to pay a $700,000 settlement after a Dearborn Heights man sued the company over a Dearborn branch that allegedly served meats they falsely claimed were halal. According to the Huffington Post, Ahmed Ahmed filed the lawsuit in 2011 against the McDonald's location at Ford Road and Oakman Boulevard after consuming a chicken sandwich there. He later found out that though the restaurant advertised the chicken as adhering to Islamic dietary guidelines known as halal, it actually wasn't. Both this and the McDonald's on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn advertise selling halal products. They are the only two halal McDonald's restaurants in the United States. No other locations were named in the lawsuit. …

Halal Meals Increasing in Dearborn Schools

As Dearborn Public Schools introduce halal options to four new schools this year, providing meals that meet religious needs can be a complex matter.

The last thing Dearborn Public Schools’ Food Service Director Jeff Murphy wants to see is students not eating, or tossing out food because they feel like they don’t have any lunch time options. But that was exactly what was occurring 11 years ago, when the schools introduced a pilot program offering halal meats at a school building. Today, the program has grown— with more more than half of Dearborn’s 32 schools offering halal options for Muslim students, with Haigh, Howard, Lindbergh and Dearborn High being added to that list this year. But making provisions for menus is a complex matter—one that’s decided on several factors, including the population of the school and the needs of an ethnically diverse community. “I expect that the number …

After re-reading my comment on peanut butter...it is lacking and ignorant..... Regarding peanut butter, reseach now suggests that the more affluent a family is, the more likely a child may become allergic to peanut butter. Why? Affluent families tend to live in cleaner surroundings, lowering exposure to microbes, which lowers the body's immune system since it does less work, which increases the …   more ›

Fuego Mexican Grill: Oh Halal Yes!

Serving fresh, made-from-scratch dishes, Fuego chef and owner Sam Alvarado is bringing his style of Mexican cuisine to east Dearborn.

Fuego Mexican Grill has the distinction of being the only Halal Mexican restaurant in the midwest. Given its location in Dearborn, halal is almost a necessity. Owners Sam and Nallely Alvarado opened Fuego six months ago after seeing a void in Dearborn's Mexican dining scene. "East Dearborn has not had a popular destination for years," he says. "Since we've opened, lots of new faces are coming this way. It's very exciting." Sam was classically trained at the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago while Nallely is a teacher. Currently, Nallely is not teaching and is working at the restaurant full time. Owning a Mexican restaurant is in Sam's blood: His grandfather founded Mexican Fiesta in Dearborn and is the namesake for some of the…
