Dearborn Absentee Ballots Could Hit 9,000

City Clerk Kathy Buda said she's anticipating a smooth, high-turnout Election Day.

The repeated messages to vote absentee from the Dearborn City Clerk's office appear to have had an effect: Clerk Kathy Buda said her office has issued around 9,200 absentee ballots. "We had an 80 percent return rate before check-in today," Buda said. "We're hoping for 90 percent." That would mean that 8,280 of Dearborn's registered voters cast an absentee ballot. If the percentage is higher, it could put the 2012 election around the highest Buda has ever seen. In 2008, 8,575 of Dearborn's 42,206 voters cast an absentee ballot. The clerk's office urged residents to vote early in this election due to the length of the ballot—in Wayne County, it's four pages, including six statewide proposals and five County Charter amendments. UM-Dearborn Student: Romney-Supporting Women Are 'Stupid'

An opinion piece in The Michigan Journal has sparked debate over women who back the GOP.

While the Michigan Journal—the University of Michigan-Dearborn's campus newspaper—made clear their support for the reelection of President Barack Obama, one staffer had a slightly different way of stating it. The op-ed by Opinion Editor Kristen Golembiewski, published Tuesday by the Michigan Journal, attacks women's support of Mitt Romney as "against the rules of feminism." "I just don’t understand why any woman, regardless of race or social status, would vote for a candidate that has made misogynistic remarks on more than one occasion, did not support the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, is anti-choice, and made comments that alluded to the idea that women have to rush home after work to be with the kids and cook dinner," Golembiewski wrote…

A few stupid comments don't represent a movement. Those men paid for their slips; they lost their seats. That doesn't vaporize merited decades of mounting protests from men, women, children, Christians, atheists, et al, against abortion. But of course, I already spoke at length on that and Roe v. Wade in my comment at the top. You neglected to respond.   more ›

Last Day to Pick up Absentee Ballot in Dearborn is Saturday

The Dearborn City Clerk's office will be open from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to accommodate early voters.

A large voter turnout and extraordinarily long ballot for the Nov. 6 election means that would-be voters' best bet to avoid long lines this election is to vote absentee. “I’m encouraging qualified voters to apply for an absentee ballot,” said City Clerk Kathy Buda. “That will allow them to feel less rushed and to thoroughly read the ballot.” Buda said that more than 8,000 Dearborn residents have already voted absentee in this election. The last day to request an absentee ballot is Saturday, Nov. 3. The Clerk’s Office will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. to process absentee applications. Absentee ballot applications and additional information are also available by calling 943-2031 or 943-2032. Absentee ballots must be turned in to the…

Lee - the "businessman halo" doesn't work so well with POTUS'. The last businessman POTUS'? George W. Bush and Hoover. Those didn't work out so well. Last POTUS with PEACEtime prosperity and 23 million jobs? Bill Clinton. And the architect of this economic boom - chairman of Bill Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers - just endorsed Obama. Dearborn Teen Can’t Vote, But Already Playing a Role in Politics

Eric Smith attended the Republican National Convention, and has hopes that other youth from his generation will explore the issues that will impact their future.

Eric Smith will turn 18 just after Election Day. It’s a cruel twist of fate for the Dearborn resident and Lutheran High School senior, who has proven to care more about politics and civic issues than most adults. But Smith is luckier than most teens, because he knows what his passion is, and is pursuing it vigorously—most recently, by attending the Republican National Convention. “(The convention) was cool for me because I always felt no one my age paid attention to politics,” said Smith, who was chosen to attend with other like-minded teens as the winner of an essay contest through Junior Statesmen of America. “It was the fastest and best week of my life.” And it solidified his future focus in politics—an interest Smith said he’s had …

Kids Get Treats, Adults Get Election Reminder With Dearborn Trick-or-Vote

The election season event brought nonpartisan voter information to residents this Halloween.

Zeinab Bazzoum, Deena Atoui and Menar Muflihi are a little old to trick-or-treat and a little young to vote—but the Dearborn residents are just the right age to Trick-or-Vote. The Fordson High School students, who are part of their school's Arab Student Union, joined around 100 volunteers who canvassed east Dearborn neighborhoods on Halloween, passing out bilingual information to potential voters. "We wanted to help out our community," Atoui said of their reasons for volunteering. "And I like working with kids," added Bazzoum. Indeed, many costumed little ones joined volunteers for the walk around the neighborhoods. They were probably in it for the candy, but that's OK, said organizer and ACCESS Civic Engagement and Field Coordinator …

Wayne County Prosecutor Endorses Wygonik for Dearborn Judge

The incumbent 19th District Court judge faces attorney Sam Salamey in the Nov. 6 election.

Dearborn's chief judge of the 19th District Court received a late-in-the-game endorsement this week for re-election to his spot on the bench from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. Judge Richard Wygonik faces Dearborn attorney and court magistrate Sam Salamey in the Nov. 6 election. More: Six questions with the candidates In a letter to Wygonik, Worthy wrote, “Your commitment to justice and families and your service to the community has earned you another term as judge of the 19th District Court. I am pleased to endorse your re-election.” Wygonik responded to the endorsement with praise for Worthy, who is also up for re-election. “Prosecutor Worthy is respected for her professionalism and dedication to serve the people of Wayne County," …

I'm thinking Salamey is going to be all about using the court to generate revenue while at the same time reducing the number of convictions for crimes through probation and diversion programs in order to keep the community happy. Is that what we want in a judge or is that what we want in a community activist? Say what you want about Wygonik, I think he beats Salamey in the integrity department.   more ›
