The Dearborn Police Department is investigating two vehicle thefts that occurred this week. The first incident took place near the intersection of Mead and Colson streets. According to police reports, a 49-year-old Dearborn woman came to the police station to report that her 1999 black Saab convertible was stolen between 3 p.m. May 21 and 8:30 a.m. on May 22. The woman told police that her car broke down on the afternoon of May 21 and she was unable to start the engine. When she returned to the location the next morning, the car was missing. Officers performed a search on the Michigan Law Enforcement Information Network and determined that the car was not impounded. A pretrial hearing for Eric Krawczyk is scheduled for June 13 in the 19th District Court.
A Dearborn police officer will face amended criminal charges associated with an alleged drinking and driving arrest when he goes before Judge Sam Salamey at the 19th District Court next month. City Prosecutor Nicole Tabin informed Salamey that her office was amending its charges against Officer Eric Krawczyk during a pretrial hearing on May 23. Krawczyk was previously arraigned on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failing to stop at the scene of an accident on April 25. Tabin upgraded the charges to operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a high blood alcohol level; operating a motor vehicle without insurance; and fleeing the scene of an accident. A wrecked car will be placed outside of the police station to remind motorists about the hazards of texting and driving.
As a reminder to motorists to drive safely during the summer season, the Dearborn Police Department will place a vehicle that was involved in an accident in front of the station beginning May 22. The display is part of the department's "Safe Driver Initiative" it conducts in conjunction with AAA Michigan every year. "Anytime you increase the number of cars on the road, you increase the potential to have an accident," Sgt. Steve White of the Dearborn Police Traffic Services Division said. "We want to keep the vision of a safe summer season at the forefront of our citizens' thoughts. We should all be responsible drivers and share the road with other motorists." A 48-year-old Detroit man was arrested by Dearborn Police for allegedly shoplifting two Gillette razors from the Walmart located at 5851 Mercury Drive in Dearborn. According to police reports, officers were dispatched to the store around 11:30 a.m. on May 14 after receiving a call from the store's loss prevention security. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a loss prevention associate who informed them that he observed the man select two razors from the cosmetics aisle and quickly exit the area. Store surveillance cameras show the suspect pay for several other items at a checkout kiosk and place the two razors in a shopping bag before attempting to exit the store. A 35-year-old Inkster man died when his motorcycle was struck by another vehicle in Dearborn on Thursday.
Dearborn Police have confirmed that a 35-year-old Inkster man was killed early Thursday morning when his motorcycle was struck by another vehicle on Michigan Avenue. According to a press release from the department, the accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near westbound Michigan Avenue and northbound Gulley Road. "Our investigation into this accident is continuing at this time and currently it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved," the department said in a written statement. A 16-year-old girl was killed in a multi-vehicle accident that shut down Michigan Avenue near the Southfield Freeway in Dearborn for three hours on Monday. Destiny Henderson, a junior at Inkster High School, died when a SMART bus struck her Ford Escort from behind while it was stopped at a traffic light on Michigan Avenue near American Drive around 3:20 p.m. Dearborn Fire Department Chief Joseph Murray said the force of the impact caused the Escort to hit a pickup truck that was also stopped at the traffic light, pushing the truck several feet down the street. Detectives at the Dearborn Police Department said Thursday that they are investigating a string of vehicle break-ins over the past few weeks. According to Crime Mapping.com, police responded to a vehicle break-in at Rockford and S. Claremont streets on May 6. Parts and accessories were stolen from the vehicle. A second larceny took place in the 5000 block of Schaefer at 3:44 p.m. on May 6. Two break-ins also occurred in the 400 block of S. Lafayette Street at 4 a.m. May 7, and at 10 p.m. May 6, police said. On May 8, officers responded to the 400 block of N. Franklin St. for a larceny complaint as well.
