A resident of a North Vernon Street home told Judge Mark Somers Wednesday, "I knew I had to move."
An issue with a purported "squatter" in a west Dearborn home appears to be nearing resolution. A hearing held Wednesday in the 19th District Court before Judge Mark Somers resulted in the eviction of the resident of the home on North Vernon Street. The man, who said he had a lease to live at the home, is ordered to be out of the house by July 23. The situation came to the attention of the City of Dearborn's Residential Services Department due to several complaints from neighbors of the home over the past few months. Investigation by Dearborn police led to the discovery that the home was actually a vacant property owned by Bank of America. The previous owners lost the home to foreclosure in 2010. Representatives from the nonprofit company will speak before the City Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals Jan. 9 and 12, respectively.
Representatives of Goodwill of Greater Detroit said this week that the nonprofit's planned Dearborn store is inching closer to reality. According to Goodwill Director of Donated Goods Jeffrey Ukrainec, the organization is set to present their store plan to the Dearborn City Plan Commission on Monday, Jan. 9. On Jan. 12, they'll head to the Zoning Board of Appeals, where they'll be seeking approval to build the store within a residential neighborhood. It's a move usually prohibited for "second-hand" stores, and one that required the Goodwill team to collect signatures from any residents and businesses within 700 feet of the store's proposed location on Newman Street, just south of Michigan Avenue in downtown west Dearborn. The west Dearborn restaurant's new location is expected to open in February or March.
Frequenters of the west Dearborn Michigan Avenue business strip can expect to see some changes this winter. Nichols Ski and Snowboard will be shifting over in their current space, making room for a new tenant: L.A. Bistro, which is moving from its location one block west. Nichols owner Karen Nichols said that remodeling of the space will likely start in a couple of weeks as her store moves its remaining inventory out. But though the project is moving along quickly, the idea was a long time coming. “Two years ago, I went over (to L.A. Bistro) and had lunch and it was wonderful," Nichols said. "(Owner Samih Johair) was busy and was turning people away. I said, ‘You know, you guys need to expand your business. Why don’t you come down and look…
