Dearborn Calls for Increased Support for Servicemembers at Veterans Day Ceremony

The annual event, held at Dearborn City Hall, honors local veterans.

Dearborn's annual Veterans Day ceremony turned the discussion on Friday to the issues servicemembers face when returning home from combat–with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, injury and joblessness all possibilities they face. "Are we doing enough?" Mayor Jack O'Reilly asked at the ceremony, held to honor Dearborn's Veteran of the Year, as well as recognize current and past servicemembers for their service. But part of thanking them for their service, O'Reilly said, is making sure they have plenty of good things to come home to. "What are we doing when they complete their service? How are we making sure that they can come back and get on with their lives?" O'Reilly asked. "No matter when we send our brave soldiers overseas, we’…

Held at Dearborn City Hall in the City Council Chambers, this event will honor Dearborn Veteran of the Year Richard Fleek, and will be led by newly installed Dearborn Allied War Veterans Commander Tom Wilson. “Veterans Day is our chance to offer a sincere thank you to those who serve and protect us. Dearborn has a long tradition of supporting these men and women,” said Mayor John B. O’Reilly. “I encourage our residents to show their appreciation, then continue to honor …

The Daily Dearborn Photo: Veterans Day

How well do you know Dearborn? Take a guess where this photo came from!

Today is Veterans Day, and as such, the Daily Dearborn Photo has celebrated our armed services all week long. Every day this week, we have featured photos of monuments and events for service members and wars that have touched all our lives. In case you're new to this feature, here's how it works: We share a photo with you from somewhere in the city, and you tell us where the picture was taken. Today, tell us: During which Dearborn event would you have seen these boots, which symbolize the city's fallen soldiers during the Vietnam War? The answer to Thursday's photo trivia is the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 75.

Losing Ground: Dearborn Veterans Groups Face Dwindling Membership

Like many veterans groups, Dearborn’s posts are having difficulty attracting younger servicemembers.

At 45 years old, Veterans of Foreign Wars Lt. Archie Kelly Post 2107 Commander Richard Fleek is one of the youngest members of his post. Fleek, who served in the U.S. Navy during the Gulf War and was named this year's Dearborn Veteran of the Year, said he believes his post may not exist in the next five to 10 years unless his membership can interest young soldiers to sign up. “It’s a problem that is happening all over the country," said Fleek. "It’s not just us." Membership Dropping Nationally, Locally With soldiers coming home from the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, one would think that membership in veterans groups would be going through the roof. Instead, numbers show the opposite. Last year, there were 1,445,550 VFW members…
