WATCH: Supporters Break Ground on Dearborn Student Housing Project
The $30 million project will make 500 housing units available to University of Michigan-Dearborn students.
A collective sigh of relief was heard on Town Center Drive in Dearborn on Monday as partners in bringing student housing to the University of Michigan-Dearborn broke ground on the $30 million project. "This is a fantastically happy day for the University of Michigan-Dearborn," commented an exuberant Chancellor Daniel Little at the groundbreaking ceremony. "It's not a huge project in any respect ... except to our students." They are a public company backed by financing, including Comerica and Huntington banks, so they will still have to pay property taxes. However, they DID catch a few breaks with Brownfield tax status because the property was deemed "functionally obsolete."
