Check Out the Progress on Dearborn Student Housing

The project is set to open in September.

Even in winter, construction is progressing on Dearborn's first student housing project. The project, set to be completed by September, is a $30 million investment. The Union at Dearborn will provide housing for up to 500 University of Michigan-Dearborn students. The Union at Dearborn officially began offering leases Nov. 14. Are Dearborn Student Housing Prices Too High?

The Union at Dearborn released its pricing structure for its upcoming student housing project this week, set to open September 2013.

University of Michigan-Dearborn students will have a new housing option come 2013—but can they afford it? Leasing rates were announced this week for The Union at Dearborn, which is set to open 500 studio, two-bedroom, three-bedroom and four-bedroom student apartments by September of 2013 in renovated space on Town Center Drive in Dearborn. The reaction to the prices has been mixed, with several students remarking on The Union's Facebook page that rates seem too high. "For most these rates, you're better off finding an apartment with a roommate," student Uzoma Okeke wrote. I really doubt that. A fully furnished 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment for $735 a month with cable and HBO, high-speed internet, electricity, water and trash. Plus basically access to a large family room on the main floor. Walk to classes, walk to shopping/entertainment and soon walk to the train station. WATCH: Supporters Break Ground on Dearborn Student Housing Project

The $30 million project will make 500 housing units available to University of Michigan-Dearborn students.

A collective sigh of relief was heard on Town Center Drive in Dearborn on Monday as partners in bringing student housing to the University of Michigan-Dearborn broke ground on the $30 million project. "This is a fantastically happy day for the University of Michigan-Dearborn," commented an exuberant Chancellor Daniel Little at the groundbreaking ceremony. They are a public company backed by financing, including Comerica and Huntington banks, so they will still have to pay property taxes. However, they DID catch a few breaks with Brownfield tax status because the property was deemed "functionally obsolete." Plans Finalized for UM-Dearborn Student Housing

A groundbreaking ceremony for The Union at Dearborn will be held at 3 p.m. on Sept. 24.

Dearborn, prepare to welcome 500 new residents to the city in 2013. Plans to add a student housing option for the University of Michigan-Dearborn students have been finalized, the university confirmed Tuesday. The Union at Dearborn—located in the former Ford Land buildings at 760 and 780 Town Center Drive across from the campus—is set to open next fall. The $30 million Urban Campus Communities development will include apartments for more than 500 students. Actually, Urban Campus Communities purchased and owns the properties. UM-Dearborn is only involved as a partner as an effort to inform students and get them interested in student housing. Sorry if that wasn't made clear enough in the original article! However, I can't comment on UCC's tax status. I would assume they are not tax exempt, but that's a good question.   more ›
