Dearborn Duo to Take Part in Detroit Urban Craft Fair

The husband-and-wife team of Perfect Laughter will be selling their prints this weekend at the area's largest annual holiday craft event.

Dearborn or Detroit; suburbs or city–it’s all the same for Christina Jacobs, one-half of the printmaking duo Perfect Laughter. The husband-and-wife team lives and works in Dearborn, but embodies Detroit’s hardworking character, said Jacobs. And more importantly, she added, it’s about the art–not where you make it. “We wanted to represent (Detroit spirit), but we didn’t want to limit ourselves to that,” she said of their decision to not include Detroit in their name. “There are artists from cities everywhere that we love. I guess we just felt like it wasn’t about Dearborn versus Detroit. It was about Detroit versus just doing what we do, and being open to being able to do it anywhere.” This weekend, Jacobs and husband Dennis will be showing…

Chef Gourmet Celebrates Opening of Cafe

The local catering company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new cafe Friday afternoon.

Chef Gourmet Catering Company on Friday celebrated the opening of their first-ever cafe, located on Southfield Road in Allen Park. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by members of the Allen Park Chamber of Commerce and City Council, as well as newly elected Mayor William Matakas. Open since 2002 as a company serving corporate and private events, this new venture is the company’s first attempt at catching diners from local businesses, including Ford Motor Company employees looking for a lunch spot during the work week. The restaurant, which serves upscale sandwiches and salads, is already a hit among the lunch crowd, said owner Deanna Myers. “We were packed at lunch today,” she said at the late afternoon ribbon-cutting, noting that …

Dearborn Frame Shop Keeps Local Homes, Businesses Pretty as a Picture

Village Picture Framing and Art Gallery offers unique art and custom framing in Dearborn's West Village Commons.

Decorating a home isn't as simple as just throwing some pictures up on the walls. It takes a vision, a plan, and often, a skillfull eye. Village Picture Framing and Art Gallery of Dearborn has been ensuring that the latter of that effort is taken care of for nearly 30 years. "When you walk into a home, you see the art," explained owner Tom Clark. "Then you see it's framed nicely." For Clark and his wife Debbie–both trained interior designers–showing off works of art or special family photos is more than cutting glass and fitting it into a frame. It's helping to create an atmosphere, and making that work the centerpiece of a home or office. "I ask customers questions–where is it going? What colors? Traditional or contemporary?" Clark …

Shop Smart. Shop Local.

Dearborn Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Giering talks about why you should spend your dollars here in the city.

Many of us have heard the phrases “Shop Local” or “Buy Local,” and I hope as you approach the holiday season, you have already started to think about how you can support these campaigns. Consider shopping at local shops and restaurants for the perfect gift. We have bicycle shops and ski stores, bakeries and gift shops, and wonderful specialty stores including Sophia’s Giftique, Village Picture Framing, Steven Bernard Jewelers, Dee’s Hallmark and Merchants Fine Wine. What about a spa gift certificate to Milan’s on Monroe or Om Spa? Give a treat to teachers or neighbors from Shatila Bakery, Iversen’s Bakery Express or New Yasmeen Bakery. Looking for a unique item? Try shopping at the Holiday Show at The Glass Academy on Dec. 3 and 4, or pick…

Dearborn Coffee Shop A Hip Hangout with Gourmet Goods

Caffina Cafe opened in October on Greenfield Road, and offers freshly roasted coffee, as well as a gathering spot for students.

Many parents say they're inspired by their kids. For Dearborn resident Allen Bakri, that inspiration has resulted in the opening of the city's newest hangout, the Caffina Cafe. Located on Greenfield Road just north of Warren Avenue, the one-month-old cafe is the latest addition to a growing local company–Caffina Coffee–which sells its products to walk-in customers, as well as distributing coffee to businesses and restaurants in Oakland, Macomb, Wayne and Washtenaw Counties. Bakri started Caffina with roaster and co-owner Mahmoud Sareini in 2001 as strictly a distribution company. Sareini, an 18-year veteran of the nut and coffee roasting business, had previously owned a coffee shop in Dearborn in the late '90s, but the venture didn't …

Dearborn Gift Store Thrives on its Unique Offerings

Sophia's Giftique, open since 2007, sells one-of-a-kind accessories, beauty supplies, home goods and more.

In a market ruled by big box stores, Sophia's Giftique isn't afraid to be unique. In fact, that's exactly why store owners Roslyn Reeves and Naomi Kennedy chose Dearborn as the location for their first-ever store when they opened in 2007. "We were looking around at places and Dearborn had a nice downtown, but nothing like this," Reeves explains. "We like it here because we can stand out." And they have, even amidst a less-than-desirable economy that has caused countless west downtown neighbors to shut their doors. It helps that Reeves, a lifelong fan of fashion, has a bachelor's degree in fashion merchandising. And in Sophia's Giftique, named after Reeves' daughter, it shows. The store is a mish-mash of everything a girl of any age could …
