Dearborn's Darany Introduces 14 Pieces of Legislation in 2011

A look back at the Dearborn representative's first year in office.

For Rep. George T. Darany (D-Dearborn), 2011 was a busy year. The former Dearborn City Council member began his first term in the Michigan House of Representatives in January 2011, and has since introduced nine bills, five resolutions and two amendments, as well as co-sponsoring another 197 pieces of legislation. Darany touted his first year in office as a productive one for the citizens of Dearborn. “Since the day I was sworn into office last year, the interests and well-being of my constituents have come first," Darany said in a statement. "I have greatly appreciated all of the input and feedback I received from Dearborn residents throughout 2011 and I look forward to continued communication as the 2012 legislative session gets underway…

Even so, as you say, he voted no, we still have those taxes. Why was not this issue voted on by the people of this state? (the same way our property taxes were voted on). This was the dictate of one man...Snyder). Let us make sure this man is a one term wonder.   more ›

Rep. Darany Visits Geer Park Elementary to Hear Concerns on Education Cuts

Parents and students were invited Monday to ask questions about how state education funding cuts affect them, and what they can do to persuade legislators to restore funds.

State Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn), along with several Dearborn Public Schools union and PTA leaders, held a town hall meeting Monday afternoon at Geer Park Elementary in order to encourage dialogue between parents, students and legislators about statewide education funding cuts. In Dearborn, those cuts amounted to $3 million in general funds, as well as $7 million in at-risk and bilingual educations funds. The district, as a result, was forced to use teacher layoffs, as well as across-the-board pay cuts, to balance their budget. “In troubled times, education is finding itself in trouble as well financially,” said Principal Andrea Awada. “But we don’t give up hope. I am very hopeful because there are individuals out there who care about…

Local Leaders: New State Assistance Limits Will Hurt Dearborn, Wayne County Residents

A bill approved in the Michigan Senate last week would place stricter limits on cash subsidies for low-income families, but some say the measures are ill-advised in light of the state’s high unemployment rate.

Some of Dearborn's poorest residents are likely to feel more economic pain during the next several months after Michigan enacts some of the toughest cash-assistance provisions in the country. The Republican-led Michigan Senate–voting along party lines–approved two bills that would curb welfare cash benefits to only 48 months during a resident’s lifetime. The state currently has a 48-month limit, but those months can be suspended as long as cash recipients can prove they are adhering to a predetermined self-sufficiency plan, which includes searching for work and/or taking part in job-training programs. The bills are designed to save the state more than $70 million in welfare benefits. Under the legislation approved in the Senate–and …

I'll try not to 'loose' it. You seem to misunderstand what this article is about. The months one can claim are now lessened. If one cannot find employment within FOUR years then there are bigger issues at hand. "The state currently has a 48-month limit, but those months can be suspended as long as cash recipients can prove they are adhering to a predetermined self-sufficiency plan, which includes…   more ›

Rep. Darany, Dearborn Schools Still Calling for Education Funding Reforms

The state budget has been approved, but Democrat legislators are still pushing for the restoration of funding–including at-risk money for Dearborn.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder may have signed the state's budget into law on June 22, but some legislators and school districts–including Dearborn–are still pushing lawmakers to restore funding. Education funding restoration rallies were held across the state Monday, the first of which took place in front of Dearborn's Long Elementary at 8 a.m. A small crowd of school employees and parents gathered as Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn) spoke about the need to continue putting pressure on Republicans to restore K-12 state funding. "There's a lot we feel we can still do and we can still bargain with the governor and the Republican delegation to do things, we believe, the right way," Darany said. "So we're keeping the pressure on them to let them …

Five things you need to know to start your day in Dearborn.

Ready to start your day? Here's what you need to know. 1. All the rain and wind has put a chill in the air today, so bring a light jacket with you when you head out.
