TV pioneer Eliot, 91, passed away peacefully at home in Farmington Hills.
Detroit's beloved weatherman, Sonny Eliot, passed away in his Farmington Hills home Friday. He was 91. The Dorfman Chapel in Farmington Hills is handling funeral arrangements, which are pending. Known for his sunny disposition and his rapid-fire quips, Eliot had a 60-year career in Detroit broadcasting and was a pioneering TV personality. Eliot joined the staff of WWJ-TV (now WDIV) after World War II and stayed there for 35 years. He was a weatherman, host of the annual Thanksgiving Day parade broadcast and hosted an "At the Zoo" series. After TV, he kept the fun going on WWJ radio (950 AM). In addition to helping his neighbors with their lawns and other housework, Klieber would decorate houses for Christmas each year.
As neighbors go, Dearborn resident Will Klieber was among the best of them. He cut grass, helped with handy work, and–especially around Christmas time–made his neighborhood bright. Klieber passed away suddenly this July. He was 50. According to neighbor Debra Walling, "He was just going for a walk in the morning and, he’s 50 years old and his heart just stopped. "It was very tragic.” Neighbors remember him as someone who was always willing to help out, even without them asking. Last winter, Klieber decorated 14 houses on his block of Highview Street with Christmas lights and displays. Bob Cipriano is remembered as a man who loved his family, volunteered at his children's schools and in youth sports programs.
Friends and family members of 52-year-old Robert "Bob" Cipriano will gather today at St. Fabian Catholic Church in Farmington Hills to remember the husband and father who was killed April 16, during a brutal attack in his home. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus said Hills officers will provide traffic control around the church, which is located on 12 Mile Road just west of Orchard Lake. Bob's wife, Rose, 51, and 17-year-old son, Salvatore, remain hospitalized with critical injuries. Railroad aficando and great-grandson of the Stroh's Brewery founder, Bauer will be remembered for his ground-breaking advances in the standardization of radio frequencies.
Longtime Dearborn resident and Ford retiree Frederick Bauer, best-known for his pioneering work on the standardization of vehicle radio frequency standards, died Aug. 6 at the age of 90. A fourth-generation Detroiter, Bauer is the great-grandson of Bernard Stroh, founder of the Stroh Brewery Company. Bauer was past president of the Dearborn Historical Commission and the Sacred Heart Parish Council. Bauer graduated cum laude in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Wayne State College of Engineering, where he is honored in the Engineering Hall of Fame. As a novice engineer with Detroit Edison, he created a method of using direct-current telephone transmission line theory for solving heat-flow problems. While …
