The hospital held an open house and breakfast on Monday to recognize its employees and its partnerships with the city of Dearborn. "I hope people spend some time thinking about what the hospital is and what it means to the community this week," said Douglas Welday, executive vice president of operations for Oakwood Healthcare, Inc. "We have a really long list of services that we provide in Dearborn and throughout the region. We are proud of the work we do, not only our acute care services, but also more importantly the community services that we provide." With a …

The popular weight loss reality show is seeking audience members for a taping on April 12.

Dearborn fans of ABC's hit reality show Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition have a chance to be part of the television program's audience during a special taping at Oakwood Hospital on April 12. The show's producers will be filming the 2013 season finale showcasing Oakwood nurse Trina Miller and six of her colleagues, who were selected to participate on the program. Miller, a resident of Grosse Ile, has always struggled with her weight, putting the needs of others before her own, the hospital said in a press release. For the past year, Miller's team focused on nutrition, exercise and keeping each other motivated and inspired. Dearborn City Hearing on Oakwood Smoking Ban Set for Thursday

Residents, city officials and Oakwood representatives will meet to discuss a resolution to complaints about the company's campus smoking ban.

A public hearing will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, to address concerns surrounding a no-smoking policy on the Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center campus. Residents of the neighborhood surrounding Oakwood came before Dearborn City Council in December 2012 with concerns that a city ordinance banning smoking on hospital grounds was driving patients, visitors and employees who choose to smoke into their neighborhoods. The ordinance, approved in January 2012 under the offenses chapter of the city code, added hospitals to the list of places in which smokers had to be at least 100 feet away before they could partake. It was enacted after Oakwood—which has its own no-smoking policy on the campus—came to the city asking for help in getting hospital …

I have heard that Oakwood Hospital has been made exempt from the City's requirement that they pay a license fee per paid parking space. If true, just another private benefit at taxpayer expense.   more ›

Oakwood Welcomes First Baby of 2013

Anaid Perez was born at 4:45 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Judy Forth, RN, had one of her birthday wishes come true on Jan. 1. Forth, 60, was on shift at the Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center in Dearborn when Oakwood welcomed the first babies of the year. “I’ve been waiting for years for this,” said Forth, who has worked at Oakwood for the last 20 years. She was a first baby of the year herself, arriving at Lincoln Hospital in Detroit 60 years ago at 17 minutes past midnight. Anaid Perez arrived shortly after 4:45 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Oakwood to mother Diana Perez and father Luis Perez of Detroit. “I knew she would come on New Year’s Day, but thought she would come earlier in the morning,” said Diana Perez. “Everything is good.” Do you know someone who was born on New Year's Day? Tell us about it …

Dearborn Looks to End Ordinance Driving Smokers Into Neighborhoods Near Hospital

The ordinance requires people to be 100 feet away from Oakwood Hospital when they smoke, which residents say has brought smokers right to their doorsteps.

Dearborn City Council took steps this week toward repealing an ordinance aimed at stopping smokers from lighting up in front of Oakwood Hospital. The ordinance, approved in January under the offenses chapter of the city code, added hospitals to the list of places in which smokers had to be at least 100 feet away before they could partake. It was enacted after Oakwood—which has its own no-smoking policy on the campus—came to the city asking for help in getting hospital staff and visitors off of Oakwood Boulevard when they chose to smoke. However, the ordinance had an unintended consequence. According to residents of the neighborhoods surrounding the hospital, hospital staff and visitors began taking their habit to their doorsteps—literally…

Woman Makes Oakwood Bomb Threat, Tells Dearborn Police 'It's Just Words'

The following information was supplied by the Dearborn Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Dearborn police responded to the Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center last week on reports of a bomb threat. According to police reports, security personnel at Oakwood contacted police on Monday, Nov. 26, after being forwarded the audio recording of a phone call between an employee and an Oakwood patient. Police listened to the conversation, in which the woman who made the threat identified herself by name, social security number, birthdate, address and Oakwood account number. She and the employee began discussing a bill that the woman received, which led to heated remarks. According to the police report, the woman was recorded saying, "I'm gonna kill you guys, literally," and "It's gonna be a lesson to you." The woman was then heard asking…

More Than 100 Absentee Ballots Cast, Thanks to Oakwood

The southeast Michigan health care provider helped secure general election ballots for 109 patients across their four hospitals.

When Tracie Terrell entered Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn in late October for a check-up and they told her she'd have to stay, life got put on hold. The resident of Westland had to cancel a meeting, let her family know where she was, and she wasn't going to be able to vote in the Nov. 6 election. "When I got here, I wasn't expecting to stay," she said. "When I realized I wasn't going home, I wondered how I would be able to vote." Luckily, Oakwood's Volunteer Services and Spiritual Support teams had wondered the same thing—and found a solution. In 2008, Oakwood began a program that helped patients secure and turn in absentee ballots. This November, the program went system-wide, helping 109 patients in the health provider's four hospitals …

Turkish Journalists Film at Oakwood Hospital for Series on U.S. Muslim Integration

The hospital's interfaith sanctuary will be included in a series of programs on efforts in the U.S. to accommodate all religions.

Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center’s Interfaith Sanctuary is now serving not only as a place of worship and reflection for hospital visitors, but as a model for America’s interfaith efforts. A group of journalists from Ankara, Turkey, recently visited the hospital sanctuary on a grant from the U.S. Department of State as part of a series of programs on and about Muslim integration in the U.S., the hospital announced this week. It was the second of two such visits, explained Alan Botto, senior producer/director with the U.S. Office of Foreign Broadcast Support. Botto had previously escorted a television crew from Bahrain to visit the hospital when the sanctuary was still under construction. “We were impressed with the project even back …
