Here are some nuggets of truths offered by Patch readers, including Nancy Czarny of Chesterfield Township - winner of Patch's Mother's Day Contest.
For as long as she can remember, Nancy Czarny's mother has been giving her simple advice to get through life. "Do what you know is right" are the six simple words that Czarny, the winner - chosen randomly - of Patch's 2012 Mother's Day Contest, remembers her mother saying most frequently. "That's what she would tell me when I was a young girl having problems with things at school or issues with friends or jobs, when I was older," recalls Czarny, of Chesterfield Township. "In essence, she was she telling me to follow my gut, do what I know is right." It's the same advice Czarny passes on to her 6-year-old daughter. "I tell her to be who she is. And to do what she knows is right and not to follow what others are doing." Last week, we asked …

National Geographic author Marybeth Bond says The Henry Ford Museum is a great one-stop destination to take mom on her big day.
The Henry Ford has been named one of the top tourist destinations in the United States to take mom for some quality one-on-one time for Mother's Day. National Geographic author Marybeth Bond recently blogged about the importance of traveling with her mother and daughters, and building memories and sharing experiences. Bond writes: Any history-loving mom will love The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, a treasure chest of American heritage and nostalgia. There’s a serious side: the bus where Rosa Parks made her courageous stand and the limousine that carried John F. Kennedy when he was assassinated. But there’s a light side too, with displays about driving across America and even a hot dog-shaped Wiener Mobile. It can be enjoyed by …

We asked you to tell us why your mom (or grandma or mother figure) is so special in anticipation of Mother's Day and you shared stories and photos that made us laugh and cry. Congratulations to our three winners (chosen at random): Maureen Krasner of Grosse Pointe Farms: Kranser was nominated by her husband, Charles, who said: "Whether we're hiking, biking, picking blueberries, playing in the sand or relaxing at home, Maureen (Mo, Mom) is happy wherever we are as a family. A phenomenal mother, wife and friend, she's always ready to dig in for fun and adventure." Krasner wins dinner at The Root Restaurant & Bar in White Lake. The Rev. Dona Gilsdorf of Birmingham: Gilsdorf, pastor at Unity Church of Rochester, was nominated by Danielle Boes…

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 13.
Still searching for a present for mom for Mother's Day? Dearborn's got options, and there's no need to revert to standards like chocolate and flowers (although those are great, too!)–get mom something unique, get it quick, and get it in Dearborn. Here's where to go: This downtown Dearborn store is everything a boutique shop should be: filled with accessories, things that sparkle, and things that smell good. Our recommendation? Walk into Sophia's Giftique, point at something and buy it. Let the staff at Sohpia's gift wrap it for free. Then pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Also: Stop by on Thursday between 5:30-8:30 p.m., when the Inkster Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will be hosting a Cash Mob at the store in …

A little late but here's a few gems from my Mom (no offense intended): 1) aalways be independent 2) always have your own money 3) never loan/give a man money 4) never let a man know how much money you have 5) put yourself first or you won't be able to be in a position to help anyone else 6) "get enough sleep, eat good, and dress warm" 7) religion is fine but live by "the golden rule"   more ›
