MDOT Launches Blog to Share, Chat With Metro Detroiters

#MetroMerge will allow residents and MDOT to interact on transportation issues.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has launched a new blog to allow residents to talk about transportation issues. The blog, #MetroMerge, is MDOT's hope to increase outreach to residents of MDOT's Metro Region, which includes Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties. It can be read at www.michigan.gov/metromerge. MDOT already has a dedicated MDOT Metro Region Twitter site: www.twitter.com/MDOT_MetroDet. Construction Alert: I-94 Ramp Closure to M-39 Starts Wednesday

A detour will be posted while the ramp is closed.

Bridge work near the I-94/Southfield Freeway interchange will enter a new phase on Wednesday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Starting at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, the westbound I-94 ramp to northbound M-39 closed until 11 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30. According to MDOT, the ramp closure is needed as crews continue bridge demolition on the eastbound Van Born Road bridge, which spans over the westbound I-94 ramp to northbound M-39. This work is part of an overall $13.8 million investment and all work is expected to be completed in November. Construction Alert: More Lane Closures on I-94, M-39 Start Friday

Construction on I-94 and M-39 will affect Dearborn-area drivers this week according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Eastbound and westbound I-94 will have alternating single and double lane closures between I-96 and Michigan Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday for ongoing bridge work. Single lane closures will be during daylight hours (7 a.m. – 9 p.m.) and double lane closures during overnight hours (9 p.m. – 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday). All lanes will be open by 5 a.m. Monday. Additionally, northbound and southbound M-39 will be reduced to a single lane under I-94 from 4 a.m. Saturday until 9 p.m. Sunday for ongoing bridge work. Construction Alert: Several I-94, Southfield Ramps, Lanes to Close This Week

Construction on I-94 and M-39 will affect Dearborn-area drivers this week according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Starting at 11 p.m. Monday night, the eastbound I-94 exit ramp to northbound M-39 will be closed for approximately three weeks. The ramp closure is needed for crews to apply epoxy sealer on the pavement and to conduct bridge painting activities. A detour will be posted. Additionally, eastbound and westbound I-94 will have intermittent single lane closures over M-39 during the overnight hours this week beginning at 7:30 p.m. and ending by 5 a.m. the following morning. Construction this weekend on I-94 will affect Dearborn-area drivers–but not those heading to the Detroit Lions game on Sunday, the Michigan Department of Transportation confirmed this week. Divers can expect to see single lane closures from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on eastbound and westbound I-94 all weekend between I-96 and Michigan Avenue. A double lane closure will be in effect during the nighttime hours from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday in the same section of the freeway. However, the lane closure for eastbound I-94 will be suspended between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday to help alleviate congestion caused by Lions fans trying to get to the game at Ford Field in Detroit. MDOT, Federal Railroad Administration to Host Public Meetings on Rail Improvements

A local meeting will be held at the Dearborn DoubleTree on Sept. 26.

The departments of transportation for Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, in association with the Federal Railroad Administration, this week announced a series of public meetings for an Environmental Impact Statement that will be prepared for the Chicago-Detroit/Pontiac Passenger Rail Corridor Program. The meetings are being held to: The EIS is being prepared to evaluate passenger rail improvements along a 304-mile rail corridor between Chicago and Detroit/Pontiac, Mich. The EIS will evaluate the effects of upgrading rail infrastructure and facilities to safely accommodate potential passenger rail service improvements. Lane closures on I-94 and M-39 will affect Dearborn-area drivers starting Tuesday, Sept. 4, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Eastbound I-94 will have the two left lanes closed from Telegraph Road to Outer Drive from 5 a.m. until noon on Sunday for ongoing bridge work at the I-94/Southfield Freeway interchange. The left two lanes of eastbound I-94 will be closed over M-39 (Southfield Freeway) from 7:30-11:30 p.m. Tuesday for ongoing bridge work. Northbound and southbound M-39 will have multiple lane closures at I-94 from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday for bridge demolition work at the I-94/M-39 interchange. During the same time period, eastbound and westbound I-94 will be reduced  to a single lane between Michigan Avenue and West Grand Boulevard for ongoing bridge and resurfacing work. MDOT to Conduct Survey on Self-Driving Vehicles

Is the introduction of self-driving cars a long way off? The Michigan Department of Transportation doesn't think so. MDOT announced Wednesday that it is conducting an online survey in collaboration with the Center for Automotive Research to determine what's needed for a successful testing environment for autonomous vehicles in southeast Michigan. Autonomous vehicles have the ability to communicate with other vehicles and the surrounding environment to safely navigate to their destination. This technology holds the potential of drastically reducing traffic crashes by taking the human elements of reaction time and distraction out of the driving process.
