What Was Your Favorite Moment of the Presidential Inauguration?

There were several highlights during the inauguration ceremony. Tell us what you found to be most memorable.

President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." As the nation recognizes Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, here's a look at the civil rights leader's Michigan connections.

Martin Luther King, Jr. left his mark during his lifetime as a civil rights activist, and his work included a couple stops in the Detroit area. As you celebrate MLK Day on Monday, Jan. 21—volunteering, learning and reflecting on King's work—take a look at some lesser known facts that really bring the message home. 1. Original Dream Speech - King first delievered the "I have a Dream" speech to a crowd of 150,000 at Cobo Hall in Detroit, two months before the famous rendention in during the March on Washington in 1963. 2. Recording star - The original version of the "Dream" speech was recorded by Gordy Records, a subsidiary of Motown Records in Detroit. 3. What's Closed on MLK Day in Dearborn?

Have the day off of work? You're not alone.

Dearborn City Hall, the 19th District Court, all three branches of the Dearborn Public Library, and the Dearborn Senior Center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The Ford Community and Performing Arts Center will be open 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., even though the senior center is closed. Other government offices—including post offices and Secretary of State offices—are also closed on MLK Day, and mail will not be delivered. There will also be no school at all Dearborn Public Schools on Jan. 21. Also, students of the Henry Ford Community College and University of Michigan-Dearborn should remember that all classes are cancelled for that day. Instead, many students are participating in the …

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day–observed this year on Jan. 16–isn't just an extra holiday off of work and school. Groups all across the U.S. use the civil rights pioneer's holiday–proposed by Michigan Congressman John Conyers Jr. in 1968 and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983–as a day to pay tribute, educate, give back and reflect on the things MLK stood for in his lifetime. Here's a look at some of the events planned in the Dearborn area surrounding MLK Day, and how you can get involved.
