Dearborn MEAP Results Show Reading Improvement—But Below State Average

MEAP 2012 proficiency levels showed both ups and downs for Dearborn Public Schools.

Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Brian Whiston was pleased with the district's 2012 Michigan Educational Assessment Program results, which were released Monday by the Michigan Department of Education. "We're very happy overall," Whiston said of the results after the Dearborn Board of Education's Monday night meeting. "But we'll never be really happy until we're leading the state in every subject." In Dearborn, results trended upward in reading and writing, as well as math, but proficiency levels overall fell in higher grade levels, with the state outpacing Dearborn in every subject except writing by grades 7, 8 and 9. The Michigan Department of Education released 2012 MEAP scores Monday.

The Michigan Department of Education on Monday released 2012 MEAP scores for every public school in the state, including Dearborn Public Schools. Here's a look at the percentage of all Dearborn students who met or exceeded state standards, as compared the percentage proficient in 2011, as well as with the percentage of students proficient statewide. In other words, for 8th graders, who scored the following, it means. Math 27.9 28.3 32.5 Reading 63.4 58 65.7 Science 13.1 14.1 15.9 so 77% of Dearborn students could not meet the state math requirements. Dearborn MEAP Scores To Be Released Today

Check back with Dearborn Patch at 10 a.m. Monday for a look at how students fared on their Fall 2012 Michigan Education Assessment Program exams.

Michigan students' MEAP results will be released Monday morning for students in Dearborn and in all public schools across the state. The scores were scheduled to be released at 10 a.m. The Michigan Education Assessment Program exam assesses students in grades 3 through 9: The annual test is designed to show students' proficiency in career- and college-ready materials. The MEAP is administered by the Department of Education, which is releasing the data on Monday. The MEAP as a standard of measuring student achievement is on its way out; beginning in the 2014-15 school year, students will be given an online exam to test their knowledge of core subjects.
