Dearborn Shop A Charming Addition to West Downtown

Make-your-own-jewelry shop Charmed & Company is located on Howard Street in Dearborn.

In a strip dominated by restaurants and bars, a new business is bringing a much-needed dash of creativity to west downtown Dearborn. Charmed & Company, nestled in between Lulu by Design and 1-800-Flowers on Howard Street, is a place where people of all ages can go to make one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry using a plethora of charms, stones and pendants. The store itself is an invention of the creative mind of Nada Younes, who also owns Lulu. She said she got the idea for the new do-it-yourself shop when she realized that Lulu by Design wasn't serving the needs of all its customers. "The difficulty we came across is that it's very hard to sell finer pieces when we have a mixed clientele coming in," she explains. "I want next door to become …

Gentlemen First Barbershop Feels Right at Home in Dearborn

Originally opened in Dearborn and gone to Allen Park, the business is back at home—and they're getting comfortable.

There’s no place like home for Gentlemen First Barbershop—and it looks like they’ve finally found a spot in Dearborn where they can stay for a long time. The family friendly but generally men-only shop first opened in 1997 on Ford Road near Fordson High School, but moved to a larger space in Allen Park six years later when business waned, explained owner Michele Jones. “Ford was my biggest demographic,” she said. “I had a lot of police and firemen, a lot of Dearborn people. Then there was nothing to bring them there.” But Allen Park “didn’t have a lot of foot traffic,” Jones said. Now, local men in need of a haircut—as well as Jones—are finding the shop’s latest space to be just right. As of last August, Gentlemen First can be found in a …

Last Call for Dearborn Cheli's Chili Tonight

The Dearborn restaurant will close Wednesday.

Fans of Dearborn's Cheli's Chili were disappointed to hear this week that the west downtown restaurant and bar will close Wednesday. The Detroit Free Press confirmed that Najib Rizk, the owner of fellow west downtown establishment Le Cigar, has purchased the building. He has not confirmed what the plans are for the restaurant. Rumors began circulating in 2012 that the restaurant was slated to close. Dearborn Patch Facebook fans were split on their reaction to the news. "Loved their veggie chili!" commented Julie Johnston. "And this is very sad news for Dearborn, indeed." "The roof deck was fun in the summer," added Cheryl Kohs. "I hope whatever moves in will keep the casual vibe." At least one resident wasn't sad to hear the news. "Glad it…

Dearborn Comic Store Set to Reopen After Van Crashes Through Wall

Stormy Records had already reopened Tuesday after Sunday's accident.

Downtown east Dearborn store Green Brain Comics is set to reopen Wednesday after closing due to a van crashing into the side of the building Sunday. Upper-level store Stormy Records, which is located within the same building, reopened Tuesday. A vehicle crashed into the side of the two-story brick building at around 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Full story: Green Brain closed Sunday after vehicle crashes into building The van made it half-way through the wall, causing extensive damage to the interior of Green Brain. ValuLand Aims to Give Dearborn Shoppers A New Option for Groceries

The store opened in the Newman Street strip on Sunday, Feb. 17.

Spartan Stores leadership heard that Dearborn has a lot of Krogers—but that didn't stop the company from finding its niche in the city's big-name grocery shopping market with its ValuLand brand, which opened its doors in Dearborn on Sunday. "(Customers are) very positive, very happy, and pleased that we're opening in the community," said Ryan Wingett, store manager of the Dearborn ValuLand, at the store's ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday. "They're glad for a different option—another avenue to buy groceries." The store, located at 22541 Newman Street in the former Michaels location, sells a full selection of groceries—including produce, meats, beer and wine, as well as magazines and greeting cards. According to Spartan Stores, the store …
