Letter: Dearborn – Hometown of Henry Ford, or Rima Fakih?

A resident sends a reminder about the city's most esteemed former resident.

Dearborn has and will always be the heart of America, with its diverse community and more importantly, the birthplace of the automobile that brought many immigrants to this country to find their pot of gold. Each day I walk around our community with my dog and each day my route takes me to the Henry Ford Centennial Library where I pass Henry Ford's statue. I wonder to myself, as I pass the long stretches of green land, if he knew exactly what he was doing when he pretty much bought up this city and then years later his descendent developed it to be one of the most progressive cities in the world? Ford Motor Company had many opportunities to take their business elsewhere. Instead, their Headquarters sits in the heart of our city where every…

An Open Letter to Gov. Snyder: How You Can Improve Public Transportation

Here's my idea: split the Amtrak line between Pontiac and Chicago into two lines.

Dear Governor Synder, I am writing to you today as a 32-year-old working resident of Michigan who is longing for employment and residence in a state that offers better public transportation.  I have not given up on Michigan yet, though.  I feel there are things that can be done here by our government, without spending millions on new infrastructure, to improve public transportation in Southeast Michigan.   Why improve public transportation here?  Because I believe it would seriously stimulate our economy and attract businesses if we could get to work and play without a car, freeing up thousands a year to spend on other things. While it is not my field of study or employment, transportation is a passion of mine. Perhaps experts or …

With Dearborn Historical Museum Cuts, Are We Losing Our Heritage?

A Dearborn resident expresses concern over the budget cuts at the museum, and urges caution in selling items or cutting staff.

The deafening lack of public communication about the impending losses at the Dearborn Historical Museum is causing a great deal of rumor and upset. In the immediate wake of severe job cuts, I understand that some of the Historical Commissioners have been checking out the museum for de-accessioning (selling or otherwise donating or eliminating) some archival or artifact items. It has been written that an all-volunteer staff is being contemplated. These may be necessary steps for the long-term health of the museum and its mission, but surely there is a more open and more cooperative way of achieving these goals. Qualified professionals, trained curators who know Dearborn such as Kirt Gross–who I understand was recently released–need to be …

Dearborn's Cat Problem

A Dearborn resident aims to educate on how everyone can help control feral and stray cat populations.

During the 13 years my business has been located in the city of Dearborn, I've heard quite a bit about how the city has a problem with rats. However, after moving into the city to live, I discovered an equally disturbing, four lettered word the city has a problem with: CATS. Stray cats are in all major U.S. cities these days, a problem made increasingly bigger by the difficulties faced in tough economic times. People everywhere have been forced to give up their pets due to a lack of money and this, coupled with how quickly they breed, has dramatically raised the number of homeless and feral cats living on the streets in Dearborn. Adding to this problem is a segment of the population who feels that by feeding street cats they are helping …

Have a neighbor with what I call the Kitty Condo on her porch where it's an enclosed shelter of sorts with electric heating blankets in the winter and lots of food and water for every stray that wants to visit. It's like a Motel 6 for cats. Also feeds every bird, squirrel and anything else that wants to get food. My car and house are covered in bird poop daily and her next door neighbors roof is …   more ›

Are We Being Bullied?

Two Dearborn resident head to trial Friday for a public nuisance violation they say is unwarranted.

It’s gratifying to read in recent months that anti-bullying campaigns have been launched nationwide–including Dearborn Public Schools. Years ago, I was in disbelief when I learned one of my daughters was being bullied by other girls at Lindbergh Elementary. It prompted family discussions about how to stand up to bullies and a phone call to one of the moms. Finally, upon my daughter’s graduation from Dearborn High, she received an overdue apology from one of the girls. Better late than never! Fast forward a few years with no kids at home–my husband and I suspect we are being “bullied.”  It’s not our neighbors or anyone we know, so it feels even more threatening. On top of that, we’ve been cautioned not to speak up with warnings of “don’t …

Update on the “Beast” and the City of Dearborn. The city wanted to postpone the jury trial, as their only witness, the Field inspector who wrote the ticket, had family issues and could not be there. A new date of May14th was set up. After discussions with the city attorney, we reached an agreement. The city took the misdemeanor down to a civil infraction, and a $100 fine. We did this as it is …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Is Dearborn Its Own Biggest Enemy?

A Dearborn resident gives his thoughts on how to fix some of the city's problems.

After all turbulence and screw up with Goodwill and the Dearborn City Planning Commission, I need to empty my brain of thoughts and impressions after living in Dearborn for a long time. Let me first say that I love Dearborn, its people, organizations, and businesses. When Biggby opened, I switched from Starbucks. Why should I send my money to Seattle, when I could support a local business? I believe that’s the best way to go. Mike Guido was a real asset to the city, being the face in Dearborn, and also outside the community, and having Mark Guido, chief of staff, basically run the day to day operations of Dearborn. Today our mayor is micro managing everything, not being a good listener, talking a good talk, but doesn't take suggestions or …
