The Dearborn Community Tennis Association will start its fifth season of middle school programs on May 3.
The Dearborn Community Tennis Association kicked off its fifth year of tennis programs this month at Dearborn, Edsel Ford and Fordson high schools–and there's still time to join before the matches start on May 3. Boys and girls in grades 6, 7 and 8 from all seven Dearborn middle schools–including Divine Child and Sacred Heart–are eligible to participate in the eight-week program. The cost of the Middle School Tennis program is $60. DCTA Executive Director Steve Behmlander said he is very excited about this year’s program. “We have many success stories from the Middle School Tennis program illustrated by players participating in the program and immediately contributing to their high school JV and Varsity programs as ninth graders," he said…

Who is the best teacher in all of Dearborn? Students, parents and community members have until April 27 to give their input. Nomination forms for the 2011-12 Alberta Muirhead Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce, are available through the district website at www.dearbornschools.org or the chamber website, www.dearbornchamber.org. Forms are also available at all Dearborn Public Schools, and the district Administration Office, 18700 Audette. Students can nominate new or veteran teachers whom they feel have made outstanding contributions to the teaching profession. Preschool through fifth-grade students are asked to describe how their teacher has created a classroom where learning is positive and fun. …

The application cutoff date for this year's parade is April 25.
Looking to take part in Dearborn's annual Memorial Day Parade? This year, the parade will take place Monday, May 28 along Michigan Avenue and in front of Dearborn City Hall. Applications from organizations wishing to participate in the parade must be submitted online to help increase the accuracy of information. The application deadline is April 25–no exceptions. The Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council and parade committee will review all new entries. Upon approval and receipt of the Hold Harmless Agreement, groups will receive a confirmation on the status of their application. Participation in the parade is not a guarantee for all applicants. Works by Ann Arbor artist Joseph Bergman will be available for viewing through April 13.
Meanings Optional–an art show of drawings, paper works and digital prints by Ann Arbor artist Joseph Bergman–closes April 13 at Dearborn's Padzieski Art Gallery after a monthlong run. The show has been brought to the gallery, which is located inside of the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, by the Dearborn Community Arts Council. According to a previous showing of similar works by Bergman at the Chelsea Center for the Arts, the artist "goes through a methodical process of accumulating images and materials, breaking them down and modifying the bits to be used, ordering the elements, and finally organizing, and resolving his compositions." Are you a fan of books on tape? Then you won't want to miss the Friends of the Library-Dearborn's Spring Clearance Sale on Wednesday, April 4. The sale will be held 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Henry Ford Centennial Library. In addition to selling the regular array of books, CDs, VHS tapes and magazines, FOLD will be selling books on tape for a special price of four for $1. There's still time–but not much–to register for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes job fair for the region’s veterans and their spouses, which will take place on Wednesday, April 11, at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn. This is my wonderful mother in law Zina Skowronek. She has been a great mother to her own three children but more importantly she has been an irreplaceable grandmother to my own 3 kids.
