MDOT to Shut Down I-96 for Construction in 2014

A public survey and comment session led officials to the decision that complete shut-down is preferable to lane closures.

After months of outreach–including a public meeting and an online survey–the Michigan Department of Transportation on Monday announced that the reconstruction of I-96 in the communities of Livonia and Redford Township will be done under a complete freeway closure. While details are still being finalized, the 7-mile stretch of the freeway between Newburgh and Telegraph roads is scheduled to close in early 2014. "We put several options on the table for the public to consider," said MDOT Metro Region Engineer Tony Kratofil. Drivers Have Until March 11 to Weigh In on I-96 Construction

The Michigan Department of Transportation's online survey on the major reconstruction project will stay open through Sunday night.

A major Michigan freeway is in need of repair–but the Michigan Department of Transportation needs input first. Motorists, business owners and residents have until 11 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, to weigh in on the future reconstruction of I-96 in Wayne County. The online survey appears on the I-96 project Web site at www.96fix.com. The survey was originally set to close Thursday, March 8, but with over 1,000 responses so far, MDOT announced an extension. Originally opened in 1971, the I-96 freeway between Newburgh and Telegraph roads is being planned to be rebuilt. Before design begins, MDOT is seeking public input regarding how traffic should be maintained during construction. Options include closing the freeway in both directions, closing …
