Like many young men and women about to graduate from college, Danard Winborn of Riverview spends his days looking for employment. "It's tough finding work when the job market is so competitive," Winborn said. Winborn, a student at ITT Technological Institute and a former member of the U.S. Navy, was one of hundreds of military veterans who attended the annual "Hiring Our Heroes" job fair in Dearborn on Thursday. The 26-year-old said he attended the fair with hopes of landing a job with a local Michigan company based on his experience in computer networking. More than 100 businesses will interview job candidates at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center on April 4.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations to host a job fair for military veterans and their spouses on April 4. The event is part of the Chamber’s nationwide “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative. More than 300 hiring fairs in 49 states and the District of Columbia have been held, and more than 14,000 veterans and military spouses have received jobs. "Hiring Our Heroes” will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, located at 15801 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. It's 2013—but what does that mean for Dearborn? Here's what residents can expect in the coming year. Dearborn's Intermodal Passenger Rail Station Armed with full federal funding, the City of Dearborn officially kicked off construction on the new train station in September of 2012. The fast-paced project is set to be completed in the fall of 2013—and with it, big plans for helping to welcome more visitors to Dearborn, as well as create more sustainability for the west downtown area. University of Michigan-Dearborn Student Housing Also set for completion in 2013 is a new student housing option for University of Michigan-Dearborn students. The Hiring or Heroes initiative comes to Dearborn April 11.
A national job fair aimed at employing America's veterans is coming to Dearborn, the city announced Wednesday. Hiring Our Heroes, a hiring fair for veterans and spouses, is hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 100-city event will be making a stop in Dearborn on April 11 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. To date, Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 85 job fairs, connecting 84,000 veterans with more than 4,3000 different employers. More than 7,300 of those prospective job-seekers have landed jobs.
