Henry Ford Community College faces a $6.5 million budget shortfall for the 2013-2014 academic year.

In one of his first official duties as the new president of Henry Ford Community College, Stan Jensen presented a sobering budget report to the Board of Trustees at its meeting on Monday. Jensen and Vice President Marge Swan revealed that the college is facing a staggering $16.5 million budget shortfall for the coming year. Swan said HFCC's the budget shortfall is due to a combination of lower property values, decreasing student enrollment, uncollectable revenue from the federal government's Pell grant and FAFSA loan programs, and rising costs for teacher retirement. "Property tax revenue is not expected to increase at this point, although we'll know more in June when the report from the city assessor is released," Swan said. She said the …

Students Give Historic Henry Ford Home New Lease on Life

Henry Ford Community College students are collaborating with the city of Dearborn to restore a historic 1919 home.

A historic home in Dearborn is getting a much needed facelift thanks to the help of students enrolled in Henry Ford Community College's architecture and interior design programs. The aspiring architects are working with the city of Dearborn to restore a home located at 22668 Nona Street built by Henry Ford in 1919 for factory workers. Dearborn acquired the structure after years of abandonment and complaints from neighbors about bad odors emanating from the property due to mold and deterioration, Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. explained. "Under our standards it was a candidate to be demolished," he said. "The Ford Historic Homes District wanted to preserve it, so we came up with the idea to work with students at HFCC as a training exercise." …

Henry Ford Students Disappointed Over Increased Tuition Fees

The tuition increase will add $2 million to the college's budget for the 2013-2014 school year.

Students at Henry Ford Community College expressed discontent over the college's announcement this month that it would increase tuition beginning for the spring 2013-14 academic semester. "It's frustrating for the students," Randall Nicholls said. "We come to a community college so that we don't have to pay ridiculous amounts of money." HFCC President Gail Mee said raising tuition fees will help balance the college's budget, which is projected to be a deficit of $3 million, and will be around $7.5 million in December. Mee said that number may change once officials finalize the budget for the 2014 school year. The increase for district residents will jump from $75 to $82 per credit hour. The increase will also affect non-residents and out-…
