Dearborn Resident Reportedly Robbed at Gunpoint Near Hemlock Park

The following information was supplied by the Dearborn Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A Dearborn resident reported a robbery at gunpoint Sunday, according to Dearborn Police reports. The resident told police that he was going for a walk at around 6:30 p.m. on Hemlock near Bingham street—right near Hemlock Park—when a woman standing nearby gestured to him to come over to her. He refused and kept walking. Then, two men joined her and also asked him to come closer. The resident again refused, at which point one of the men pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun, pointing it toward him. The other man, he told police, went through his pockets while he was being held at gunpoint and took his wallet. The wallet contained $200 cash, his ID and a green card. All three suspects reportedly fled the scene, driving east on Hemlock in …

Cad..yes, pepper spray is an alternative. But even better is now a taser that has recently been made legal to carry. You still have to apply for a CCW (Concealed Carry permit) but is also a sure fire way of disabling an attacker without having to use lethal force.   more ›

Dearborn Pool Millage Will Not Appear in 2012 Elections

Save Our Pools is biding its time with the hopes that a city-wide millage to keep all eight pools open will be voted on in next year's elections.

Dearborn residents will have to wait another year to voice their opinion on the city's eight public pools, as a previously discussed city-wide millage is being postponed. Only the neighborhood surrounding Hemlock Pool—which is currently closed, as part of budget cutbacks that closed two pools in 2011—will be holding a Special Assessment District vote to determine if residents near the pool will pay for renovations and upkeep to the pool through taxes. A millage–which would cover repair and operational costs for all eight city pools–had a chance to appear on this year's ballot, but will not make the appearance, accordint to the  Save Our Pools group, which has decided to bide its time until election season next year. Ryan Woods of SOP said …

Economics 101 -- ask the people living by Ford Woods park. The park or pool has not helped their property values. Also, name calling will for the most part get you no where.   more ›

Dearborn Teen Dedicates Time, Effort to Fixing Up Local Park

Husain Bazzi raised the money and did the work to turn his neighborhood's deteriorating basketball courts into a great space for local kids to play.

While the hot summer days of late June meant hours of video games or watching TV for many youth, Dearborn teen Husain Bazzi spent his time enlisting the generosity of the community and the help of his friends to make Dearborn’s Hemlock Park a better place for kids to play. "I used to play at Hemlock's courts, and I realized that the condition was deteriorating," explained Bazzi. Looking to earn his Eagle Scout badge through the Boy Scouts of America, the 17-year-old Fordson High School senior decided that he would make fixing up the courts his community service project. But it involved much more than just fundraising. In addition to raising $800 to buy supplies to resurface and repaint the court, plus add new nets to the baskets, Bazzi and…

Not to diminish what Hussain Bazzi did, I have to agree with those who are asking about their tax dollars. I have another question. What about the tax dollars that were confiscated from the zoo? They're taking more money and yet someone from the outside had to come in and do fundraising to collect money and do the job the city should? Huh?   more ›

Dearborn Teen Raising Funds to Improve Local Park

Husain Bazzi will earn his Eagle Scout badge for his efforts to fix Hemlock Park's basketball courts.

Dearborn teen Husain Bazzi is taking it upon himself to fix up his neighborhood park–and he needs the public's help. Bazzi, who will start his senior year at Fordson High School in September, is raising $800 to pay for the resurfacing and improvement of the basketball courts at Hemlock Park. He plans to lead a group of volunteers in doing the work, too, which would include resealing the asphalt, marking the courts, and replacing the nets. "I used to play at Hemlock's courts, and I realized that the condition is deteriorating," he explained. "There are cracks across the playing court; there are no lines. "It's playable, but it's something that could and should be restored." Bazzi said he realized that continued cuts to Dearborn's city …
