A political expert said Michigan could be “ground zero for a recall vote” against Snyder in 2013.
Could the sudden passage of the highly controversial right-to-work legislation lead to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's name appearing on a statewide ballot for something other than his re-election campaign? One political expert thinks it's possible. Joshua Spivak, a senior fellow at Wagner College’s Hugh L. Carey Institute for Government Reform, told Politico that Michigan could be “ground zero for a recall vote” against Snyder in 2013. “There doesn’t seem to be a specific goal of going after state legislatures or state governors in any significant way, though that might change in Michigan because of right-to-work (legislation),” Spivak said in the Politico story. Local recall elections, such as the one voters recently approved against Troy …

On Friday, a gunman killed at least 27 at a school in Newtown, CT. Meanwhile in Michigan, Gov. Snyder has a bill on his desk that would allow some concealed guns in schools. What do you think?
The Michigan Legislature on Friday approved a bill allowing those with additional training to carry concealed weapons into venues such as schools, day care centers, churches and sports stadiums, according to WDIV-TV in Detroit. The question is especially timely after a gunman opened fire Friday in a school in Newtown, CT, killing at least 27 died in a shooting an an elementary school, including 18 children. The bill awaits Gov. Rick Snyder's signature after it cleared the Republican-controlled House on Friday and the Senate on Thursday, WDIV-TV reported. However, the station reports that Snyder said Friday that he will likely take some time to review the bill, "especially in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting." Should Gov. Snyder …

Two different versions of the legislation passed the Michigan House and Senate Thursday amid huge union protests in Lansing.
Just after right-to-work legislation passed the Michigan House and Senate, Dearborn legislators on Thursday were quick to label the passage as a cave-in to special interests, and hurtful for the state’s middle-class families. "This is a very sad day for the hardworking men and women of Michigan,” Dearborn Democrat Rep. George Darany said in a statement Thursday after the house vote, which passed the legislation, 58-52. “These individuals have fought tirelessly for the safe working conditions and fair pay that we now enjoy. Unfortunately, the leadership in Lansing has clearly caved to special interests and corporate profits and has put the livelihood of our middle-class families in serious jeopardy.” “My democratic colleagues and I remain …
Gov. Rick Snyder announced Thursday that he would like to see right-to-work legislation on his desk before the end of this year's legislative session.
Michigan could very well be a right-to-work state in 2013 following Gov. Rick Snyder's call to action Thursday for the state legislature to pass a "workplace fairness and equity" bill in the next few days. Throngs of protesters gathered on the Capitol lawn and in the lobby of the governor's headquarters Thursday, including members of Dearborn's UAW Local 600. Union members from across the state joined the protests, organized by the Michigan chapter of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. UAW posted updates from Lansing on its Facebook page, including video from outside of the Senate chambers, where a crowded room of protesters chanted against the legislation. Snyder held a press conference Thursday …

After a draft bill that if approved would bring sweeping education in 2013 was unveiled, Dearborn Public Schools’ superintendent and board members spoke out about how those changes could affect programs and students.
A 300-page education reform bill drafted for Gov. Rick Snyder that would overhaul how public education is administered in the State of Michigan was universally renounced by the superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools and members of the Dearborn Board of Education Monday night. The bill would drastically change the state's public school system, including the following changes: “I think this bill is appalling,” said DPS Trustee Aimee Blackburn at the board's Monday night meeting. “There are too many people in Lansing that are trying to take control over what should be a local decision.” Supt. Brian Whiston said before Monday’s meeting that the new program would be an unmitigated disaster that destroys the construct of local school …

The ban on the synthetic drugs would go into effect on July 1.
Critics of the synthetic drug known as K2 or Spice have been calling for a statewide ban on the substance, which can have powerful side effects. On Tuesday, Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to sign into law a ban on the drug, state Rep. Kurt Heise (R-Plymouth) confirmed Monday. The substance has been sold legally because it is marketed as herbal incense or potpourri and is labeled "not for human consumption." The Detroit Free Press reports: "One of the bills updates the list of chemicals used to make synthetic drugs and would make them illegal to possess and sell. The ban would go into effect July 1." Other legislation would go into effect immediately and authorize the state to temporarily ban a substance if officials decide it poses an "…

The state budget has been approved, but Democrat legislators are still pushing for the restoration of funding–including at-risk money for Dearborn.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder may have signed the state's budget into law on June 22, but some legislators and school districts–including Dearborn–are still pushing lawmakers to restore funding. Education funding restoration rallies were held across the state Monday, the first of which took place in front of Dearborn's Long Elementary at 8 a.m. A small crowd of school employees and parents gathered as Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn) spoke about the need to continue putting pressure on Republicans to restore K-12 state funding. "There's a lot we feel we can still do and we can still bargain with the governor and the Republican delegation to do things, we believe, the right way," Darany said. "So we're keeping the pressure on them to let them …
