This 3-month-old puppy is available for adoption from the Dearborn Animal Shelter.
Widget is a spunky little pit bull terrier/Labrador retriever mix, only three months old, neutered, and eager for his forever home. This lovable boy is best suited for a home without children younger than 12, who might not understand that some dogs don't like to share. Like all puppies, he needs to learn his manners and would do well in a home prepared for the work involved in raising a puppy. To learn more about Widget, view his Petfinder profile here. Widget qualifies for the Luv-A-Bulls rate of $100, which includes six months of training. Adoption fees include a basic medical exam, behavior assessment, age-appropriate vaccinations, parasite and worm check, spay or neuter, microchip ID, travel box, and pet care information. Shelter supporters can vote in an online Facebook contest through April 12.
The Dearborn Animal Shelter's staff could get a lot of help feeding stray and lost dogs through an online feeding competition sponsored by Pedigree. The shelter is one of three in Michigan featured in the national competition. The other shelters include the Michigan Animal Rescue League, and Genesee County Animal Control. Voting started on Facebook March 28 and continues until 11:59 a.m. April 12. Each Facebook account is allowed one vote per day, and two of the five proposals will win the food based on votes received and Pedigree's determination of which community can benefit from the program the most, according to rules for the competition. "If we win, the money we could save on dog food would be freed up to pay for medical supplies and …

Ten local charities are competing for $40,000 this week in The Great Charity Giveaway sponsored by The Suburban Collection–including Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter. In voting earlier this month, 10 charities were selected as finalists from 76 organizations nominated by local supporters. Established last year by the Troy-based automotive retail group, the winners will be selected by votes made on Suburban Collection’s website, www.SuburbanCollection.com, or their Facebook page. The 10 finalists are: “Supporting local, regional and national organizations dedicated to enhancing our educational services, children and family assistance and enhancing the quality of life in our communities has been important to us for over 60 years,” …

The shelter will offer 50 percent off all adoptions through Aug. 11.
The final round of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Rachael Ray $100K Challenge is under way, and the Dearborn Animal Shelter is in the running to win between $5,000 and $125,000. The $100K Challenge is an opportunity for animal shelters across the country to save more lives and get rewarded for it. It's a competition that inspires shelters and their communities to come up with innovative ways to save at least 300 more dogs and cats within a three-month period than were saved during the same three months the year before. For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, this means finding homes for more than 700 animals from August through October, which is nearly double last year's adoptions. As such, the shelter is asking …

A meeting with city officials Thursday night yielded the shelter a letter of intent to support efforts to build a new home for the Dearborn nonprofit.
Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is one step closer to its goal of building a new facility. Dearborn City Council and shelter representatives met Thursday night to discuss the possibility of collaborative efforts to construct a new 20,000-square-foot shelter. The meeting yielded a letter of intent from the city supporting the effort and pledging to look into donating a parcel of land on which to build the shelter. However, they are not willing to commit to putting any city funds into the $4 million project at this time. President of the shelter's Board of Directors Laurie Baur asked council members to give serious thought to assisting with building a new facility for the shelter, which is city-owned and partially funded by city …

Hundreds of dogs and their two-legged owners participated in Saturday's Dearborn Mutt Strut and Pet Expo at Ford Field. This 3-year-old Husky is available for adoption from the Dearborn Animal Shelter.
They don't call her Ms. Bella because she's a Twilight fan. This 3-year-old Husky, currently available for adoption from the Dearborn Animal Shelter, is so named because with one look at her, "beautiful" is the only word that comes to mind. Bella likes to go for walks, and is somewhat excitable. She did well on temperament testing, but because she has a tendency to guard her chew toys and put her mouth on hands, she may do best in a home with no children under age 12. Also, because of her breed, Bella would do best in a home without cats. View Bella's Petfinder profile here. The adoption fee for a large adult dog such as Bella is $140. Adoption fees include a basic medical exam, behavior assessment, age-appropriate vaccinations, parasite …
