Burglaries, Assaults Up in 2011 in Dearborn

The FBI's Crime in the United States report shows more than 4,000 crimes overall that were reported in Dearborn last year.

More than 4,000 crimes were reported in Dearborn in 2011, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's recently released Crime in the United States report. The statistics showed both ups and downs for the city, including a noticeable decrease in forcible rapes and robberies in 2011, but also a four-year trend of increases in aggravated assaults. Property crimes in 2011—including burglary, larceny, car theft and arson—were up from 2010 (3,718 to 3,757), but trended down overall over the past four years. Want more news about Dearborn crime? Hate Crime Investigation Continues of Fire at Building Connected to Dearborn Mosque

Some advocacy groups have called for the incident to be investigated as a possible hate crime.

Dearborn police and FBI officials are still investigating a fire and graffiti discovered Tuesday at a storage building at the Dearborn Woods Community Center on Pelham, as community reaction to the incident continues to grow. The Council for American Islamic Relations of Michigan called on law enforcement officials to investigate the incident as an anti-Muslim or anti-Arab hate crime, citing similar cases in Michigan and beyond over the past few months. The affected building is owned and operated by the American Muslim Center, located nearby out Outer Drive in Dearborn. A fire destroyed the storage space Tuesday morning, which was also found to be spray painted with obscene graffiti, along with the word “Arabs.” FBI Detroit spokesman Simon…

Hassan's right. Unacceptable behavior. Also, those teens were lucky, the next garage may have an owner who may be a little more 'forceful' in the protection of property. In Detroit, this garage burning would not even be news unless a body or two were involved. http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/Man-s-Body-Found-Inside-Burning-Garage/-/1719418/1786820/-/gtlivt/-/index.html   more ›

FBI Changes Definition of Rape for Crime Reporting

The department expects statistics to rise for 2011 due to new reporting parameters.

A new definition of rape for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Report will likely mean higher–but more comprehensive–statistics for the violent crime. The new definition, according to a press release from Attorney General Eric Holder on Friday, Jan. 6, “is more inclusive, better reflects state criminal codes and focuses on the various forms of sexual penetration understood to be rape.” The definition, used by the FBI to collect information from local police departments about reported rapes, now reads: “The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.” The original definition of forcible rape…

Wrongful Arrest Leaves Community Asking: How Did This Happen?

A Dearborn businessman was arrested for Hezbollah connections on Friday, but released when the FBI realized they had the wrong man.

The wrongful arrest of a prominent Dearborn community member has left community leaders and residents wondering how such a mistake was made. On Saturday morning, the Detroit Free Press reported that Ali Hammoud, president of the Bint Jebail Cultural Center, was arrested Friday night at his Dearborn home on allegations that he had smuggled and sold cigarettes in support of Hezbollah. However, Hammoud was released Saturday after the FBI discovered that they had mistaken him for someone else with a similar name and description. FBI Detroit spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold told the Free Press that, "The individual fit the description/identifiers of an active warrant. It was later determined it was not the correct individual, and he was released." …
