Divine Child Senior Awarded $5K Rotary Scholarship

The Rotary Club of Dearborn presented Kevin Hart with the scholarship during their annual Youth Month events.

Kevin Hart, a senior at Divine Child High School, was awarded the $5,000 Harry A. Sisson Memorial Scholarship during the Rotary Club of Dearborn annual Youth Month. Criteria for winning the Sisson Scholarship include exemplifying the Rotary service ideals, along with high academic achievement, leadership among peers, and demonstration of the highest ethical standards. The award was presented to Hart by Ray Trudeau, Dearborn’s Rotarian of the Year. The Dearborn Rotary Club, through the Dearborn Rotary Foundation, awards this annual $5,000 college scholarship, which is made possible through an endowment provided by the Harry A. Divine Child Cheer Takes Second in State Finals

The team lost the state title by less than one point in Saturday's competition.

Divine Child's varsity cheer team took home second place at the Division 2 state finals on Saturday at the Grand Rapids DeltaPlex. The team fell less than 10 points short of the title, coming in second to the team that won the state championship in 2011 and 2012: Gibraltar Carlson. DC's cheer squad came in with a score of 772.92 (232.1, 226.62 and 314.2). Gibraltar's final score was 782.48. Overall, it was a successful season for the No. 2 ranked DC cheer team. After placing second in districts, the team went on to win their regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 16. Divine Child Cheer Heads to State Championships Saturday

The Falcons will face off against seven teams in Grand Rapids.

Can the Falcons pull it off this year? The Divine Child High School varsity cheer team is headed to the Division 2 State Finals on Saturday, March 2, at the Grand Rapids DeltaPlex. There, DC will compete against Allen Park, DeWitt, Gibraltar Carlson, Grand Rapids Christian, Mt. Pleasant, St. Joseph and Wyandotte Roosevelt. The competition starts at 10 a.m. The stakes are high for the DC squad, which came in at second place to Gibraltar Carlson in 2012 and 2011. Last year, the Lady Falcons were just three points shy of the title. After placing second in districts, the team went on to win their regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans.

There's no doubt that students at Dearborn High, Fordson, Divine Child and Edsel Ford know how to support their sports teams. But, do Dearborn schools have the best fan section around?  Now you've got a chance to prove it. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans and is ready to highlight the best student cheering sections across Michigan. To enter, follow these rules: The MHSAA Student Advisory Council will choose five finalists. MHSAA officials will visit each school on a Friday game night to see the fan section in person. The winner will be announced on Feb. 22 and will be invited to the Class B Boys Basketball Semifinals at the Breslin Center on March 22 to be recognized and receive …

Dearborn Teams Lead the Pack in Guido Showcase

The annual basketball tournament is held to raise funds for the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Edsel Ford High School hosted the annual Guido Showcase on Wednesday. The annual Dearborn-based tournament raises funds for the Karmanos Cancer Institute. in memory of former Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2006. Basketball teams from Dearborn High, Fordson High, Edsel Ford and Divine Child competed against other area schools in the tournament. The showcase is usually held over two days during the district's winter break, but was condensed to one. According to the Detroit Free Press, Ali Farhat—playing with the Pioneers—was the stand-out player of the day. Farhat scored 37 points in the team's win over Detroit Catholic Cental, including seven 3-pointers. Here's a look at how the teams fared: Girls …

DC Volleyball Heads to State Semifinals

The Lady Falcons will take on Lake Odessa Lakewood Thursday night.

Dearborn Divine Child's volleyball team is headed to the Class B state semifinals on Thursday in Battle Creek. The Lady Falcons will face Lake Odessa Lakewood at 7:15 p.m. in the Kellogg Arena for a shot at state finals. DC is fresh off of a Tuesday win against the Haslett in four games: 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22. According to MLive, DC dominated the first two matches before losing the third and struggling their way to a win in the fourth. “We stayed confident the entire time, and we knew we were going to win,” Senior Captain Megan Mancini told MLive. “We came out strong in the first two sets, and honestly I think we came out a little cocky in the third and let them come back. Football Update: Fordson Falls, Dearborn High Makes a Comeback in Third Week

Here's a look at the outcomes from this weekend's varsity prep football games for Dearborn.

The tables turned over the weekend for Dearborn varsity prep football, with a tough first loss of the season for Fordson, and conversely, Dearborn High's first win. The Pioneers played on Friday at Romulus, taking down the team on their own turf, 45-28. Also that night, Divine Child headed to play Windsor Holy Names and Edsel Ford went to Belleville. Both Dearborn teams lost; 12-7 Windsor, and 20-17 Belleville in a nail-biting overtime. But it was Fordson's game on Saturday against Warren De La Salle that had Dearborners rooting the most. The Tractors went in with something to prove–they had won their first two games of the season, and had been beaten by De La Salle in 2011. But the Pilots' Damorria Lilly carried the team to victory. …

Football Update: Fordson, DC, Edsel Sweep; Dearborn Struggles in Second Week

Here's a look at how Dearborn's four varsity football teams fared in their second games of the 2012 season.

It's been a rough start to the 2012 varsity football season for Dearborn High School. After losing their Aug. 24 opener to Clinton Township's Chippewa Valley, the Pioneers again took a loss on Friday at Dearborn Heights Robichaud in a difficult 28-21 decision. Meanwhile, Dearborn's three other prep football teams continued their first-week winning momentum. Divine Child ousted Inkster, 37-12, on Thursday; Edsel Ford edged Garden City, 21-12, on Friday; and Fordson trounced Redford Thurston in a 35-14 victory on Thursday.
