DIA Thanks Voters for Millage as Some Cities Continue Fight to Keep the Funds

A lawsuit is before the Wayne County Circuit Court filed by Dearborn and other communities fighting to keep part of the tax dollars in their downtowns.

The Detroit Institute of Arts this month thanked voters for approving a millage last August to support the museum at their announcement of the 2013 Inside|Out installations, even as some communities continue a fight in court to keep a portion of those tax dollars. Dearborn Heights was among the 25 communities selected to host reproductions of the museum's masterpieces as part of the 2013 program, which will be the first since a millage to help support the DIA was passed in August. Dearborn hosted the program last summer. Voters in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties approved a tax of 0.2 mills for the next 10 years to help cover the museum's operating costs. In return, tri-county residents will receive free admission to the DIA for the next…

Abu Hak, AGREE with you completely. What this article does not say is that the DIA duped the voters. If you decide to visit this facility when they have a special showing, they CHARGE you even if you are living in the tri-county area. Reason, they have always charged for specialty showings. Where was that on the ballot? I would have agreed that the city should keep their mitts off of the money …   more ›

DIA's Inside|Out Program Coming to Dearborn Heights

The city is among 25 throughout Metro Detroit chosen to host outdoor art installations this spring and summer.

The Detroit Institute of Arts has selected Dearborn Heights among the 25 Metro area communities that will feature Inside|Out outdoor art installations this spring and summer. Dearborn had the program last summer. "Now in its fourth year, Inside|Out brings reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to the streets of metro Detroit," a DIA press release said. "Inside|Out aims to connect with audiences outside the museum walls in places where they live, work and play." Dearborn Heights will host Inside|Out summer installations from April through June (see below for a complete list of participating communities); which artworks the city will host has yet to be determined. The Inside|Out program is funded through a partnership with …

Dearborn Joins Lawsuit for Right to Keep Tax Money Earmarked for Zoo, DIA

Dearborn is one of nine cities asking a judge to decide a dispute they have with the Wayne County treasurer.

Now that voters have passed special millages for the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Zoo, all Dearborn residents must pay the tax.  However, money collected from areas within the city's Downtown Development Authority districts never gets to the DIA or the zoo. Instead, it’s kept locally to help fund the DDAs. Leaders of nine communities have banded together to file a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court, asking a judge to decide whether the practice is legal. The communities include Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Wyandotte, Northville, Plymouth Township, Romulus, Taylor, Belleville and Van Buren Township.  The lawsuit was filed this month against Wayne County Treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz and the two taxing authorities set up to …

My tax bill states the money amounts going to the DIA and the Zoo. I think it is fraud to state this on my bill and use the money for another purpose. It's really difficult to trust elected officials when they try to play a slight of hand trick with our tax money.   more ›

What Can You See for Free at the DIA? Vermeer, Picasso, Dalí and More

Here are some of the displays that residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county can now see for free at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

After tri-county voters passed the DIA millage in the election yesterday, the Detroit Insititue of Arts wants to make sure that residents get their money's worth. “When we announced that we would seek the millage, we pledged that if it were to pass we would provide free admission to residents of all three counties. We are immediately following through on that pledge," said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director, in a press release. Tri-county voters approved a tax of 0.2 mills for the next 10 years to fund the arts authority, so admission is now free to residents of Oakland, Wayne and Macomb county residents. Here are some of the special exhibits that residents can see: A painting by Johannes Vermeer on loan from the National Gallery of Art in …

Letters to the Editor

Letter: Art is for Everyone

A Dearborn resident implores his neighbors to join him in voting "yes" for the DIA millage.

I am a resident of Dearborn and am writing to ask my neighbors in Wayne County to join me in supporting the Detroit Institute of Arts by voting YES for our county’s art institute authority on Aug. 7. The DIA has a world-class collection that could never be replaced and it’s one that we need to protect and keep available for our county. It’s because of this collection and the museum’s international stature that the DIA can attract exhibitions such as Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus and the current Five Spanish Masterpieces. It’s also a testament to the DIA’s commitment to our county and region that the museum offers programs such as Friday Night Live! at the museum and Inside|Out in our communities. These programs are specifically designed …

Great thinking. The National Archives are also tax subsidized rather than generating their own money to remain solvent. Maybe you could arrange to sell off the declaration of independence and the constitution to an oil billionare? I'm sure it could shave a few cents off your annual tax bill also.   more ›

DIA To Host 'Mustache Day' in Celebration of Salvador Dalí

Visitors with mustaches receive free general admission to the Detroit Institute of Arts Aug. 3-5.

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is offering free museum admission to any visitor who wears a mustache—real or fake—from Friday, Aug. 3 to Sunday, Aug. 5 during regular museum hours. The promotion celebrates the eccentric appearance of Salvador Dalí, whose painting Soft Construction with Boiled Beans is currently on view in the DIA’s exhibition Five Spanish Masterpieces. This weekend, visitors can enjoy a variety of museum programs, including The Dalí Project—a puppet performance that explores Dalí’s embrace of the subconscious through various forms of puppetry—presented by Puppet Junction. Schedule of performances: Performances on Friday and Saturday are appropriate for adults only; Sunday’s performance is appropriate for ages 8 and up…

Free Art! Dearborn Residents Get Complimentary DIA Admission This Sunday

Show a Dearborn ID to get four passes for free.

A trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts can only be made better one way: if it's free. This Sunday, July 29, Dearborn residents will get just that. By showing a driver’s license or state I.D. with a Dearborn address, residents will receive four general admission passes good for Sunday. The DIA is open 10 a.m. -5 p.m. on Sundays and is located at 5200 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. Dearborn residents have this special opportunity because Dearborn is one of the cities participating in the DIA’s Inside|Out program, which places replicas of painting masterpieces in outdoor areas visible to the public. The free admission day is the DIA’s way of thanking Dearborn for helping make Inside|Out such a success. More: Read about Inside|Out on Dearborn …

This is just another redistribution of wealth!! I don't go to the DIA, don't want to go to the DIA & those that want to go should pay admission just like every other museum. No way would I vote to raise my own taxes for something I never plan on using so someone else can go for free. Why should I be paying their entrance fee??   more ›

Guest Commentary: A Case for the DIA Arts Millage

'The case for the DIA millage is compelling . . . for future growth in the arts and the economy. That is pretty good return for about $15 per year.'

This viewpoint essay by Birmingham area photographer Rod Arroyo, who's also a certified planner and design consultant, is reposted with permission from his blog at cityphotosandbooks.com. Voters in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties will be asked Aug. 7 to approve 0.2 mils for 10 years, which is approximately $15 per year for every $150,000 of a home’s fair market value. This money will go to provide one of many sources of funding needed to support a world-class art museum: the Detroit Institute of Arts. As the vote nears for the Arts Millage in southeast Michigan, I feel compelled to share some of my thoughts. The Detroit Institute of Arts is an irreplaceable resource that brings incredible works of art, film, music, and so much more to …

You say the city of Detroit owns the DIA. But cant sell items in the DIA to pay it's (Detroits) bills. If I was broke and owed entities money, I would be forced by principle to sell all my worldly possessions on E-bay for cents on the dollar to try and make a payment to somebody, or they would get a court order to seize my possessions to satisfy the debt. Same principle should apply to the DIA …   more ›
