Dearborn Teens Honored as Top Youth Volunteers

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards named youth making an extraordinary difference in their communities and beyond.

Two Dearborn teens were among those honored as the state's top youth volunteers for 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring middle level and high school students for outstanding volunteer service. Ali Elreichouni, 17; and Marwa Harp, 17, are both seniors at Fordson High School. Elreichouni founded the “Do Something Club” at his school to encourage young people to perform community service and to help them believe that each person can make a difference. Ali’s first effort as president of the organization was to organize a community and school recycling and beautification campaign for which members of the club made and distributed recycling bins around town and planted flowers in public gathering places. Dearborn Volunteer Emergency Response Team Receives Statewide Honor

The Dearborn CERT team was named the 2012 Team of the Year by the State of Michigan in December.

Dearborn's Community Emergency Response Team was recognized Thursday at Dearborn City Hall for their continued contribution to the city—efforts which earned them title of 2012 CERT Citizen Corps Team of the Year. The team has collectively donated more than 24,000 hours of time to serving at city events, as well as in emergency situations, since forming in 2005. Dearborn's Greatest People of 2012

Changing lives, in Dearborn and beyond—who's your pick for the city's Person of the Year?

Dearborn residents are building sustainable gardens, helping raise money or gather funds for those in need, and bettering their neighborhoods. Here are just a few of those stories—some of our favorite Greatest People in Dearborn from the past year. Dema Fawaz, now a student at the University of Michigan, spent her senior year at Dearborn High School helping to collect books. Her objective? to create a library for Oakwood Healthcare's Center for Exceptional Families. Read the full story here. Steve Arnold was terrified when he had to …

Sacred Heart Volunteers Spend Holiday Helping the Homeless

Volunteers from Dearborn Sacred Heart joined others spending their Thanksgiving feeding the less fortunate at a Detroit soup kitchen.

For the past four years, Paul Armstrong, 21, of Melvindale, has risen early Thanksgiving Day to serve turkey dinner to the homeless from 7 to 11 a.m. at Manna House soup kitchen in Detroit. “A lot of people complain about waking up early in the morning, and all that, but ... by the time you get here, all the drowsiness goes away,” he said from his post at the kitchen this past Thursday. “Just the joy of seeing a smile on someone’s face, even when you just give them a drink of water—it’s priceless—it beats sleeping in totally.” What started out as a social activity with the Dearborn Sacred Heart Parish youth group has turned into an annual Thanksgiving tradition for him and his 19-year-old brother, Mike. “I’m helping out people that can’t …
