The Friends of the Dearborn Symphony will host its 32nd annual Home Tour on Saturday. The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Shady Hollow Court in the Dearborn Country Club Estates and will feature tours of 29 large ranches and two-story renovated, designer-decorated homes. Visitors can stroll through the neighborhood or ride in a courtesy bus that departs regularly from the Dearborn Country Club, which will serve as the tour headquarters. In addition to the tour, guests can enjoy a catered lunch and a jewelry and art sale. There will also be a presentation by Patrizia Makahon and Lynn Jovick, Detroit interior designers. The orchestra will perform a selection of pieces by Beethoven, Holst, and Brahms at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center.
The Dearborn Symphony Orchestra is gearing up for its final concert of the 2013 season. The concert will take place at 8 p.m. May 3 at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, and features the music of Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 1," as well as Gustav Holst's “Jupiter” from “The Planets.” Other performances include the introduction and Movements 1 and 2 from Max Bruch's "Scottish Fantasy"; Johannes Brahm's "Piano Concerto in D Minor"; and Jean Sibelius' "Finlandia." This concert will feature violinist Anna Mieczkowski and pianist Heather Shen, the winners of the symphony's Youth Artists Solo Competition. College students and young families can network at "afterglow" events following orchestra concerts.
The Dearborn Symphony Orchestra is hoping to attract a younger audience to its concerts beginning this year with the launch of "Forte," a social networking group for college students and professionals. "We want to bring in a younger crowd to see and become involved with the symphony," organizer Jessica Matthews of Dearborn said. Members of Forte can enjoy special afterglow events such as a beer tasting or swing dancing class, while meeting other professionals after attending the orchestra's concerts. "Our focus is on college students, young professionals, recent graduates, and young families ages 21 through 49," Matthews said. By Sandy Butler The Dearborn Symphony, along with Russian pianist Gleb Ivanov, will perform Edvard Grieg's powerful Piano Concerto during a special concert at 8 p.m. on April 12 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. This is the third time Ivanov will perform with the symphony, conducted by Kypros Markou. Ivanov has been hailed by the New York Times as “a young super-virtuoso with musical sensitivity and an appreciation of style to go with the thunder and lightning.” An attention-grabbing "boom" opens the concert with dramatic chords from Franz von Suppé’s sparkling "Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna Overture," composed in 1844. The 51st season begins Oct. 5 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center.
As the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra prepares to kick off its 51st season, the arts organization is hoping to raise funds to ensure that they’ll have a 52nd season, too–and well beyond. A Night at the Oscars will invite supporters of the symphony to a black tie gala at the Fairlane Club. In true Oscar fashion, the Sept. 15 event will include a special “red carpet” walkway, as well as a silent auction, live music from a symphony pianist, dinner, and dancing. The Dearborn Symphony Orchestra's annual Home Tour will make its way through Dearborn for the 31st year this Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The focus of this year's tour will be the historic subdicision of Springwells Park. Six homes will be highlighted in the neighborhood, focusing on their historic value, unique architecture, and stunning gardens. Springwells Park, the historic early-American subdivision designed by Edsel and Henry Ford, is located at Rotunda Drive and Greenfield Road. Young musicians will be required to audition for performance spots with the symphony.
Youth musicians have until Feb. 10 to put their names in the running as solo performers with the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra. Audition dates were announced this week for the 2012 Youth Artists Solo Competition, which will decide a chosen few musicians who will be able to perform with the Dearborn orchestra. First, however, musicians must submit an application to audition. The form can be found on the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra website. Forms must be mailed to the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra at P.O. Box 2063, Dearborn, MI, 48123 and postmarked no later than Feb. 10. Auditions are limited to the first 30 applications received in each category–piano or strings–and are based on the postmark dates.
