Dearborn Public Schools was honored by the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce on Friday for its five-year early college alliance program with HFCC.
In recognition for its efforts to prepare students for a competitive workforce, Dearborn Public Schools was named "Innovator of the Year" at the 2013 Business Recognition Awards Ceremony & Expo (BRACE) on Friday. The annual event is organized by the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, and showcases the contributions to the city from more than 35 area businesses. DPS was honored for its collegiate academic partnership with Henry Ford Community College. It is the only district in Michigan to offer a state-funded five-year program — where students receive a diploma and associate’s degree including books — at no cost to families. The program will begin with students entering their junior year during the 2013-2014 school year. "This is truly an …

The local restaurant is working with teachers at Dearborn Public Schools to provide a safe environment for children and teens affected by autism.
Nicole West knows firsthand the many issues autistic children face in school and in life. The teacher, who works with autistic students at Dearborn Public Schools, is hoping to spead the word about the increasingly prevalent neurological disorder during a special dinner for families at Buddy's Pizza on April 20. The fourth annual Autism Awareness Day will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. and will feature sensory tools, environmental accommodations, visual menus, and communication prompts for children and teens. "A lot of people have a hard time taking their family out to eat when they have a loved one who is autistic," West said. "Buddy's is taking extra steps to provide a safe, fun environment for families." Autism is a disorder that affects …

A middle school student was suspended for posting threatening images on his Instagram account.
A fifth grade student at Dearborn Public Schools was suspended for 10 days for allegedly making threating comments to classmates online on Monday, school officials said. According to David Mustonen, communications coordinator for DPS, the student was posting pictures onto a social media website, however he could not reveal the nature of the photos. "The suspension is standard procedure as we continue our investigation. We have been in contact with the Dearborn Police and they are involved in the investigation," Mustonen said. "At this time we have determined that no students or staff were in any immediate danger but these types of comments are taken very seriously by the district and we will work with the Dearborn Police, the student's …
Last year's wildly successful benefit for the children of slain former Dearborn Schools business manager Robert Cipriano drew more than 2,000 people to the Farmington YMCA.
A 5k fun run and walk that last year raised more than $60,000 for the children of Robert Cipriano, killed in a brutal attack on his family, returns June 7 to the Farmington Family YMCA. The inaugural Cipriano Classic far exceeded organizers' expectations, drawing more than 2,200 participants. "We were truly astounded by last year's participation. The outpouring of support from the Farmington community and beyond exceeded all expectations," event co-chairwoman Jenny Birmelin said. "With more time to plan this year, we are looking forward to seeing everyone once again and uniting the community in support of the Cipriano family." Robert's wife, Rose, and his son, Salvatore, were seriously injured in the April 16, 2012 attack; Salvatore's …

Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, DPS will charge a fee for students who participate in sports and extracurricular activities.
In the face of budget cuts and rising costs, Dearborn Public Schools officials have decided to reinstate the district's "play to participate" fee for students beginning in the 2013-2014 school year. According to Abe Mashour, coordinator of athletics for DPS, the district suspended the fee for the 2012-2013 school year but is now facing a $150,000 budget deficit. "Ultimately we would like to do away with 'pay to participate,' but with less money coming in from the state, we need to supplement those funds as best as we can," he said. Mashour said rates have not yet been determined, however he is considering a fee schedule the district implemented in 2011. The plan calls for elementary students to pay $35 per academic club; $45 per middle …

Submitted by: David Mustonen Plan your summer vacation now and prepare to be back in town ready to learn for the first day of the 2013-14 school year on Sept. 3. Although there are still several weeks remaining in the current school year, many parents, students, and community members are making plans for next year. The 2013-14 calendar is now available and includes vacation days and important testing dates. Several factors determine the district calendar including state mandates, a county-wide common calendar, community needs, professional development obligations, and days decided through negotiations between the Board of Education and the Dearborn Federation of Teachers. The 2013-14 district calendar includes nine late start dates (four …

Beginning in the fall, qualifying juniors will be eligible to obtain an associate’s degree for free.
Dearborn Public Schools will soon offer students a chance to graduate with a high school diploma and an associate's degree through a new "early college" partnership with Henry Ford Community College. Beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year, students who attend one of the district’s three high schools — Edsel Ford, Fordson or Dearborn High — have the option of enrolling in a five-year program. "The idea is that it's a school within a school," said Dr. Gail Shenkman, associate superintendent of secondary education. "The program is set up where students don't have to leave their home school but can earn college credit while still enjoying everything that comes with high school life — homecoming, prom, graduation, etc." Starting in their …

The school district will implement the health evaluation forms for athletes outlined by the Michigan High School Athletic Association beginning in the fall.
Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, student athletes at Dearborn Public Schools will undergo a more comprehensive health screening prior to participating in sports programs. Abe Mashour, coordinator of athletics for the district, said DPS will implement the Michigan High School Athletic Association's health physical before the start of the fall season. The four-page document includes a health history questionnaire that asks about the student's medical history of injury, family health issues, and a history of heart problems, among other issues. "It's important to keep the health of our student athletes at the forefront of our district," Mashour said. "The MHSAA physical provides a better gauge for detecting a student's overall well-…

Dearborn residents will be asked to OK up to $76 million for safety and technology improvements in school buildings during the Nov. 5 general election.
Dearborn Public Schools is moving forward with its SMART bond proposal following approval from the Dearborn Board of Education on Monday. The board voted 7-0 to put the proposal on the Nov. 5 general election ballot in order to give district officials more time to meet with residents and garner feedback about the bond. The district is asking voters to approve up to $76 million for a 20-year period to help pay for capital improvement projects, including $600,000 for security improvement projects, $800,000 for maintenance, $3.6 million for 30 new buses, and $12 million for technology. The rest of the bond is earmarked for additional projects as needed. Prior to the board's vote, Trustee James Schoolmaster proposed putting the bond issue …

Local residents can provide feedback on a proposed $76 million bond election for Dearborn Public Schools on the district's website.
The Dearborn Public Schools Board of Education is seeking community input in regards to placing a $76 million bond proposal on either the August 6 primary ballot or the Nov. 5 general election ballot. The public can take part in an online survey by visiting the district website, www.dearbornschools.org, and clicking on the link located on the home page. No personal information will be collected by the survey. “Although this is a non-scientific poll it will provide the board with one more way of gathering input from the community about the two election dates,” David Mustonen, communications coordinator for Dearborn Public Schools said. At the March 11 Board of Education meeting, the administration presented a proposal for a $76 million bond…

Well getting rid of clubs and sports is stupid. Most parents are involved in their children's learning. I push sports so my kids have something to do to keep them busy. Sports also keep your child physically fit (NOT OBESE) and teach them socialization beyond texting. I have two middle school students, they have played sports since they were 4. I did not PUSH them into sports, they had an …   more ›
