Changes to Come for Dearborn Farmers Market in 2013

With a new manager, the market closes out its 2012 season and prepares for new things next year.

The Dearborn Farmers Market has ended for 2012, and fans of the weekly outdoor event can expect some changes when it reopens in the spring of 2013. The first of those transitions is already apparent, as new market manager Millie Judd—a Dearborn Heights resident and frequent volunteer of the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce—has taken the place of market founder Joan Reed. Reed, who started the market under the chamber five years ago, said she resigned from the job due to disagreements between herself and chamber leadership over the future and direction of the market. Reed said her vision was a market that sold only Michigan-made goods from local vendors, and was a community gathering place. "I firmly believe in the mission of the market," …

Support Vets With Salsa at the Dearborn Farmers Market

Check out our Dearborn Farmers and Artisans Market vendor of the week!

When Gunny Sergeant Dave Smith was serving in the Marines, his fellow service members loved nothing more than getting a taste of his homemade salsa. Generally used to the canned variety, Smith became famous for his blend of fresh peppers, tomatoes, onions and spices. Retired from the Marines for four years, Smith's salsa-making business exploded. Jar Head Salsa, based out of Flint, is now carried in a number of Michigan stores, and can be found in local farmers markets like Dearborn's, too. True to their roots, ten percent of proceeds from sales of Jar Head Salsa and their homemade chips are given back to the Flint VFW group. Vice President of Operations and Marketing Glen Brittingham is out at the Dearborn market every Friday giving out …

Dearborn Band Takes Listeners 'Behind the Sun' With First Album Release

Check out the Anthony Lai Band at the Dearborn Farmers Market this Friday.

When Anthony Lai first heard the Beatles in sixth grade, he decided two things: He loved the band, and he wanted to perform music. Years later, the lifelong Dearborn resident now holds several music-related degrees, teaches music courses at Henry Ford Community College—and just released his first EP with the Anthony Lai Band. HFCC was also the setting for the band's coming together; Lai met keyboardist Bonnie Schippling while in music classes there, and added bassist Nick Kischuk, guitarist Joe Giese and drummer Anthony Fiolek while teaching at the school. “I teach recording techniques and …. (they) were my students and just blew me away,” Lai said. True to his roots, Lai describes the band’s sound as “Beatles-esque.” “There are more …

Local Teen an Avid Volunteer at the Dearborn Farmers Market

Daniel Judd was bored, and took his mom's advice to give his time to a local cause.

When most teens find themselves bored, they locate the nearest electronic device. But Dearborn Heights resident Dan Judd decided to use his free time for good: the 14-year-old has spent every Friday volunteering with the Dearborn Farmers Market. "I was bored, and I was looking for something to do," Judd explained. "This gives me something to do." The hours are early–he gets there around 6 a.m. every week to help with setup–but Judd said he has a secret weapon: the teen said he stays up all night. His mother, Millie Judd, is involved with the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, and suggested to her son that he help out the weekly outdoor market. And it's not the only volunteering Judd does. He also helps out his elderly neighbor across the …

I agree with the above comment. The hours are very difficult for those of us who work. I wish the hours extended into the evenings more often like a lot of other cities.   more ›

'Meat Local' with Natural Local Food Express at the Dearborn Farmers Market

Check out our Dearborn Farmers and Artisans Market vendor of the week!

We've all heard the phrase "eat local," but don't always live up to it. Natural Local Food Express is aiming to change that. And what's more–founder Gary Kuneman is bringing his local goods to the Dearborn Farmers Market every week this season. He's not a first-time market man, and it shows: Arrive early if you want to snag the best cuts of meat and freshest eggs from Kuneman's cooler, because regulars know how good they are, so they go fast. Luckily, if you can't find the T-bones or chicken breasts you're looking for Fridays in Dearborn, you can stop by the Natural Local Food Express store in Plymouth. There, find all the goods Kuneman carries at the Dearborn Farmers Market, and a whole lot more. But for the true market experience–and to …
