Who Plows the Snow in Dearborn?

A major snowstorm is expected to drop 2-5 inches on Dearborn Thursday night. See where the plows are before you head out.

When the snow falls, the question on every person's mind will be: When is it safe to drive? According to the City of Dearborn, the city's Department of Public Works will generally send out plows when any more than 3-4 inches of snow falls within a short period of time, and depending on weather forecasts. Wayne County residents have an added advantage to safe winter driving with "Compass" technology, which allows them to see where the plows are headed. Dearborn Public Works Yard Open Saturday

The Department of Public Works yard will be open Jan. 19 for residents looking to dispose of construction materials, furniture or other items.

Have some broken furniture to unload? Leftover bricks from a construction job? Even a toilet? Dearborn will be hosting a free disposal day on from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Department of Public Works yard, located at 2951 Greenfield Road. Normally, things like furniture, bathtubs and construction materials can only be picked up curbside, and require a special fee for pickup, starting at $50. But on Jan. 19, residents can drop off the following items with no fee: furniture; dirt, sod, sand, concrete and bricks; firewood, logs and stumps; bathtubs, sinks and toilets.  Fuel, tires, ammunition, refrigerators, microwaves or other appliances are not accepted. Dearborn to Host Free Shredding Day Saturday

Residents can bring documents to shred to the DPW Yard.

Shred Corporation will sponsor a free document shedding day for Dearborn residents this Saturday. The event will run from 8 a.m. to noon at the City of Dearborn DPW Yard, located at 2951 Greenfield Rd. south of Rotunda Drive. This event is open to Dearborn residents only. Proof of residency is required. The limit is a maximum of 50 pounds, or five office sized boxes of residential paper documents per person. For information on the event, call 313-943-2085.

City Looks at Department Consolidation to Cut Costs, Streamline Services

The Departments of Public Works and Residential Services plan to combine their home inspection divisions.

Inspectors currently working under the Dearborn Department of Public Works’ Neighborhood Services division could soon be moving under the umbrella of Residential Services, according to a budget plan presented to the city Thursday evening at City Hall. The shift of five full-time and 10 part-time employees may seem insignificant, but could go a long way in making the inspection of homes and identification of violations more efficient for residents and the city. The six-month process would involve retraining all inspectors on city ordinances that apply to residential areas, as well as streamlining the codes identified by both departments and redistricting the city for purposes of inspections. “The No. 1 focus is not to reduce cost,” …

Need Trees? City Orders Start Feb. 15

Residents can order trees to be planted in front of their lawn through the Dearborn Department of Public Works.

Beginning Feb. 15, and for a limited time, Dearborn residents can order affordable trees that will be planted on the easement in front of their homes. The City of Dearborn encourages the planting of trees as a way to keep neighborhoods attractive, reduce energy consumption and support a healthier environment.  The annual spring tree planting program is open to Dearborn residents only.   Trees for 2012 cost $175 each, and the supply of trees for the program is limited. Trees range in size from eight to 10 feet in height and are sold on a first come, first served basis through Dearborn’s Department of Public Works. Residents can choose from an assortment of trees.
