The Local Officials Compensation Commission's recommendations were approved by City Council Tuesday.
Deliberations by Dearborn’s Local Officials Compensation Commission found that the salaries of all top elected officials should be maintained for 2013-14, according to the City of Dearborn. Council on Tuesday approved the recommendations of the commission, which met in January to deliberate compensation packages for the mayor, city clerk, council and council president positions. The packages, in addition to salary, also include an 80 percent/20 percent cost-sharing medical benefit plan for all officials. This is commensurate to plans available to all city employees per new state regulations that require municipalities to implement cost-sharing plans. Here’s a look at the salaries through 2014: According to a report from the commission, …

Coming out of dire straights in 2012, leadership of the Dearborn Historical Museum are asking Dearborn City Council for five years and some monetary help to make the keeper of Dearborn's history one of the city's greatest assets. Acting museum Director Jack Tate this month presented the city with the Dearborn Historical Museum’s five-year plan, which was made with the assistance of the Michigan Historical Society. The plan includes the development of new fundraising programs, resurrection of defunct ones, an audit of the museum’s inventory, and a plan for renovation and reorganization of the museum’s properties. “It’s an aggressive plan, and I’m going to stick with it,” said Tate, who is retired and currently runs the museum pro bono. “I’m…

Dearborn City Council approved a list of "exotic" animals not allowed as pets Tuesday night.
Honey Boo Boo would have a hard time in Dearborn. Though the reality TV star's pot-bellied pig may prove humorous on her show, it's now part of a list of animals that require a permit or are unlawful to be kept as pets in the city of Dearborn. The amendment to the Animals Chapter of the city code was approved by council at their Tuesday night meeting. According to a memo sent to city officials by the Legal Department on behalf of the Dearborn Animal Shelter, shelter officials made the request to add a list "fad" pets which, the city says, "become a burden and are then abandoned at the animal shelter." "These are animals that are not conducive to city life," Council President Tom Tafelski explained at the council's Jan. 29 meeting. The …

A study session on a smoking ban ordinance for the hospital was held Thursday at Dearborn City Hall.
A study session on a contested ordinance banning smoking near Oakwood Hospital yielded no immediate solutions Thursday night at Dearborn City Hall. City officials met with representatives from Oakwood, as well as several residents of the neighborhood surrounding the hospital, to discuss concerns that the city ordinance—which prohibits smoking within 100 feet of hospital property—is driving visitors, employees and even patients into neighborhoods to light up a cigarette. Oakwood Healthcare enacted a no-smoking policy on all its properties in 2007, and does not hire employees who use tobacco products. However, that doesn't stop any smokers who were employees before that time—as well as visitors and patients—from partaking in the habit. …

Residents, city officials and Oakwood representatives will meet to discuss a resolution to complaints about the company's campus smoking ban.
A public hearing will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, to address concerns surrounding a no-smoking policy on the Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center campus. Residents of the neighborhood surrounding Oakwood came before Dearborn City Council in December 2012 with concerns that a city ordinance banning smoking on hospital grounds was driving patients, visitors and employees who choose to smoke into their neighborhoods. The ordinance, approved in January 2012 under the offenses chapter of the city code, added hospitals to the list of places in which smokers had to be at least 100 feet away before they could partake. It was enacted after Oakwood—which has its own no-smoking policy on the campus—came to the city asking for help in getting hospital …

The race for Dearborn City Council is already heating up.
With the City Council primary election still months away, two candidates are hoping to get an early start to spreading their message to residents by hosting a meet-and-greet event this Monday. Residents can meet Colette Richards and Michael Albano—the first names to emerge as possible candidates for Dearborn City Council—from 5-6:30 p.m. at Park Place on Feb. 4. Park Place is located at 23400 Park Street. "We wanted to meet more residents," Richards said in a statement. "Even though we might know some of them from Facebook, or they have seen our blogs, they don't know who we are or what we stand for." Though the candidates aren't running on the same platform, Albano said he felt hosting an event together would allow residents to get to …

The newest phase of the City of Dearborn's storm sewer separation is set to begin this spring, City Council announced Tuesday. Council approved a contract for $13.14 million—with a $500,000 contingency for unforeseen circumstances—for this phase of construction, which will separate combined sanitary and sewer pipes along main roads in the affected area, as well as include repaving of the roads. "It's a short-term inconvenience, but a long-term benefit," Dearborn City Council President Tom Tafelski said of the construction. Expected to start during the 2013 construction season, the project will affect the area of CSO 4—from Wilson Avenue south to Cherry Hill, and from North Waverly east to North Elizabeth Street. The course is expected to break even for fiscal year 2013, which ends June 30.
A revenue and expenditure budget for the Mystic Creek Golf Club at Camp Dearborn—which was repossessed by the City of Dearborn in late 2012—was approved by Dearborn City Council Tuesday. It's expected that the golf course will come close to breaking even for fiscal year 2013, which ends June 30. Revenues and expenditures for the course are expected at just under $700,000 each. City officials agreed in October to begin the process to repossess the golf course and banquet center, which has been run by a private company that effectively stopped paying its lease. The city made a deal with owner Jim Dewling and his company, Total Golf, to buy the property and all assets for $900,000—minus anything Dewling owes on the property, including back …
