No Raises This Year For Dearborn's Elected Officials

The Local Officials Compensation Commission's recommendations were approved by City Council Tuesday.

Deliberations by Dearborn’s Local Officials Compensation Commission found that the salaries of all top elected officials should be maintained for 2013-14, according to the City of Dearborn. Council on Tuesday approved the recommendations of the commission, which met in January to deliberate compensation packages for the mayor, city clerk, council and council president positions. The packages, in addition to salary, also include an 80 percent/20 percent cost-sharing medical benefit plan for all officials. This is commensurate to plans available to all city employees per new state regulations that require municipalities to implement cost-sharing plans. Here’s a look at the salaries through 2014: According to a report from the commission, …

Dearborn Residents Begin to Pull Petitions to Run for City Council

The filing deadline to run for local offices is May 14.

Though city council, mayoral and city clerk elections are still 11 months away, the effort to get on the ballot has already begun for some Dearborn residents. In addition to the mayor and clerk positions, all seven council seats are up for reelection in 2013. As of Jan. 8, two residents had pulled petitions to run for Dearborn City Council: Colette Richards and Michael Albano. Richards, a 15-year resident of Dearborn, is a media secretary with the Dearborn Public Schools, longtime member and former president of the Dearborn PTA, as well as founder of the city's Special Education PTA. She serves on the City Beautiful Commission, is a board member of the Dearborn Rotary Club, and is active with Dearborn Relay for Life. "I want to make sure …

Last Day to Pick up Absentee Ballot in Dearborn is Saturday

The Dearborn City Clerk's office will be open from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to accommodate early voters.

A large voter turnout and extraordinarily long ballot for the Nov. 6 election means that would-be voters' best bet to avoid long lines this election is to vote absentee. “I’m encouraging qualified voters to apply for an absentee ballot,” said City Clerk Kathy Buda. “That will allow them to feel less rushed and to thoroughly read the ballot.” Buda said that more than 8,000 Dearborn residents have already voted absentee in this election. The last day to request an absentee ballot is Saturday, Nov. 3. The Clerk’s Office will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. to process absentee applications. Absentee ballot applications and additional information are also available by calling 943-2031 or 943-2032. Absentee ballots must be turned in to the…

Dearborn Clerk Urges Voters to Cast Absentee Ballots This Election

A presidential election, combined with an extraordinary long ballot in Wayne County, will mean long lines at the polls this Election Day in Dearborn.

Planning to vote Nov. 6? You may want to bring a snack, or a novel. Dearborn City Clerk Kathleen Buda said voters should prepare for the longest ballot she’s seen in her 15 years in office. “It’s a two-page ballot, both sides,” she said. “So the lines will be long.” The ballot this Election Day will include a presidential election, elections for the offices of state representative, U.S. representative, U.S. senator, and a number of local offices—including, in Dearborn, the Board of Education and 19th District Court. There will also be five statewide ballot proposals, as well as five proposed Wayne County Charter amendments. As such, the clerk’s office is encouraging anyone who is eligible to vote absentee. According to Deputy Clerk Lola …

Complaint from Dearborn Precinct During Primaries Unsubstantiated, Clerk Says

Dearborn city officials investigated allegations of inappropriate behavior by poll workers during the Aug. 7 primary election.

A complaint made by a Dearborn voter concerning a poll worker at her voting location was found to be unsubstantiated, City Clerk Kathy Buda said. According to Buda, a voter contacted her Tuesday and said a poll worker at Precinct 3–St. Alphonsus Church–was making comments about candidates as they checked the her in. She "was adamant" that the poll worker was attempting to sway her vote, Buda said. Poll workers at the location told Patch that "the situation has been sorted out" as of late Tuesday afternoon, and campaigners working for the Arab American Political Action Committee said they didn't hear anything inappropriate being said to voters. Buda, upon arriving at the location to investigate, agreed. "I questioned the three remaining …

Dearborn Among 70 Communities That Must Accept Late Absentee Ballots

Dearborn's primary election results won't be official until Aug. 9.

A ruling by a federal judge Monday will force the Dearborn City Clerk's office–among 69 other Michigan communities–to accept overseas and military absentee ballots past the Aug. 7 primary election deadline. Normally, ballots–absentee included–must be in by 8 p.m. on election day. According to a release issued last week by Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, a survey that asked Michigan municipalities to verify the status of absentee ballots found that 70 had missed the June 23 deadline for sending out ballots to military and overseas voters. The finding sparked a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit against the state of Michigan. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Robert J. Jonker ruled that those communities would have to accept ballots …

Voting Delayed at 3 Dearborn Precincts When Polling Laptops Arrive Late

Voters were told to wait, or come back when some Dearborn polls were unable to open at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Delivery of new laptops to Dearborn's 50 voting precincts caused three to get a late start to the Aug. 7 primaries, the Dearborn City Clerk's office confirmed Tuesday. Elections Supervisor Cindy Galea told Patch that her team was charged with dropping off and setting up the laptops for poll workers, which were being used to check in voters for the first time in Dearborn's voting history. However, she said, they weren't fully ready as the 7 a.m. voting start time approached. "We were running a little behind," she explained. As a result, when voters were ready to cast their ballots at three of Dearborn's precincts, the precincts were not ready. Voters were asked to wait or come back later in the day. But those who are not able to come back …

Dearborn Overseas Primary Ballots Coming in Despite Late Sendout

Dearborn is one of 70 municipalities included in a federal lawsuit for sending absentee ballots out past the June 23 deadline.

A late send-out for absentee ballots will have little effect on military personnel's ability to cast their vote in Dearborn, City Clerk Kathy Buda said this week–despite the fact that it has sparked a federal lawsuit. Dearborn and Dearborn Heights have been named in U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit against the state of Michigan as two of 70 local city and township clerks that missed deadlines for providing absentee ballots to military and overseas voters for the August primary election. According to a release issued by Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, a survey that asked Michigan municipalities to verify the status of absentee ballots found that 70 had missed the June 23 deadline for sending out ballots to military and overseas …

Maybe if Kathy Buda put in a full days work this wouldn't happen. She is a part time employee receiving a full time salary. She has been robbing the city for years! Maybe if new technology was implemented in that department it would be more efficient. Out with the old and in with the new. 2014 will be a glorious year. Bye bye Buda!   more ›

Where Do I Vote in Dearborn for the Presidential Primary?

Polls will be open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. in Dearborn on Feb. 28 for the primary, and absentee ballots are still available.

While Dearborn City Clerk Kathy Buda said her office is expecting a low turnout for the Feb. 28 presidential primary elections, it's still important for residents to know where to go to vote. All 50 Dearborn precincts will be open on Tuesday from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Unlike November's election, no consolidation of precincts will take place, in accordance with federal law. Absentee ballots will be available for request through Saturday, Feb. 25, and must be turned in by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The City Clerk's office, located on the bottom floor of Dearborn City Hall, will be open from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 25 to accomodate absentee voters. Because the primary will be conducted as a "closed" primary, voters must request a specific party's ballot at …
