Three animal rescue groups in the Metro Detroit area have been chosen as the newest recepients of the Pedigree Feeding Project. The winners include the Michigan Animal Rescue League, Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter and Genesee County Animal Control. The program will supply the shelters with 100 percent of their core dog food needs, at absolutely no cost, for one year. Hundreds of dog owners filled Ford Field Park to help raise money for shelter adoptions on May 11.
Pet lovers turned out en masse for Saturday's Mutt Strut fundraiser for the Dearborn Animal Shelter. The Mutt Strut & Pet Expo is the largest gathering of pet fans in the area, and this year it raised more than $70,000, Kelle Sisung, development director for the Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter said. "Without this event, we couldn't help rescue a lot of the animals," she said. This year's top individual pledge winner was Dolores O'Berts ($1,447). Tom Fisher also received $1,300 in pledges. The K-9 Explorers, led by shelter manager Heather Mehi, raised $15,984 in pledges as a team. Mehi individually raised $11,800. The Dearborn Animal Shelter's eighth annual Mutt Strut & Pet Expo will take place this weekend at Ford Field. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 and is expected to draw hundreds of dog lovers throughout Southeast Michigan to Dearborn. Elaine Greene, executive director for the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, said the event is the largest gathering of pet fans in the area.
