VIDEO: Hundreds Run to Raise Awareness of Child Abuse

5K run honors slain child abuse victim Dominick Calhoun at Kensington Metropark in Milford.

Hundreds of runners braved chilly Saturday morning winds to honor slain child abuse victim Dominick Calhoun in a 5K race at Kensington Metropark in Milford. Four-year-old Dominick, of Argentine Township, was killed at the hands of his mother's ex-boyfriend. He was among more than 2,284 children in Genessee County who were abused and neglected in 2010. The run, organized by child abuse advocacy group ChildHelp, paid tribute to Dominick and other abuse victims while raising the profile of Dominick's Law, pending legislation that would enforce harsher penalties for those who abuse children. Elegance and Fun Await Attendees of Night of "Hopes and Dreams"

The girls' night out will benefit Dearborn-based nonprofit Child's Hope, which seeks to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Optimism mixes with elegance on Sept. 22 when The Henry Hotel hosts the 7th annual Hopes & Dreams: A Girls’ Night Out. The evening benefits Child’s Hope, a central voice to prevent abuse and neglect of children in Wayne County. As its largest activity, Hopes & Dreams raises close to $70,000 annually. Hosted by broadcast and business icon Anne Doyle, the 2011 event features a Neiman Marcus fashion show and upscale artisans’ boutique. Guests will savor gourmet hors d’oeuvres with paired wines while browsing handmade jewelry, handblown glass and more objets d’art from local designers.
