How Will You Give This Christmas?

Leave a comment below to let us know what charity you plan to help this holiday season.

Christmas is the season of giving, and Patch wants to know what charity or group you are giving to this year. The American Red Cross released a poll in November in which most Americans said that they will continue to donate to charity this holiday season. In fact, most people said that their giving to political causes and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts will not reduce their year-end gifts to charity. The Red Cross poll also said that friends play a large role in charitable giving. Half of all donors (51 percent) said they would donate if a friend talked to them personally about a charity. So now Patch is asking you: What charities do you plan to help this Christmas? Will you donate to the Salvation Army or Toys for Tots? Will you volunteer…

My favorite for the last 35 years has been the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, a 98-year old 501(C)(3) charity that this year hopes to raise $1.2 million to provide 32,000 Christmas packages stuffed with warm clothing, hats, gloves, toys, dolls, books, candy and a host of other gifts for kids aged 5-13 in Detroit, Harper Woods, Highland Park and River Rouge. Send tax deductible checks to…   more ›

Dearborn Firefighters Gear Up for Fall Fundraisers

A pumpkin patch, open house and charity hockey game will all raise funds this month for the Dearborn Firefighters Burn Drive.

Forget the World Series, and the University of Michigan-Michigan State football game. This week's biggest sporting rivalry will pit Dearborn teachers against firefighters–and no matter what the outcome, it's sure to be a win for both groups' charities. The Dearborn firefighters hockey team, will play host to a team of educators hitting the ice on behalf of the Dearborn Education Foundation on Oct. 15 at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Field House. Proceeds from the game will be split evenly between the foundation and the Firefighters Burn Drive. Fireman Mike Mattern, who plays on the team, said it's the first time they've taken on teachers for charity, but he expects it to be an exciting game. "The game is free, but donations will be …

Photo Gallery: Detroit Tigers' Raburn Serves Floats at Dearborn A&W

The Tigers' utility player stopped by the local restaurant to serve root beer to fans, sign autographs and raise money for charity.

Ryan Raburn–the Detroit Tigers utility man who splits time at second base and left field–made a stop at Dearborn's A&W restaurant Tuesday afternoon to help raise money for the Detroit Tigers Foundation. The 30-year-old Tiger served root beer floats, signed autographs and took pictures with fans for about a half hour, giving his time to a nonprofit that donates thousands of dollars annually to metro Detroit youth, recreation and education. But the restaurant's charitable mood didn't end with Raburn's departure. A&W locations around the metropolitan area are giving out free small root beer floats all day Tuesday in exchange for donations to the foundation.

Cruisin’ Michigan Flexes its Charitable Muscles

Saturday's car show on Michigan Avenue and Friday's preview event combine the area's rich automobile heritage with local charity.

Although a large part of Detroit’s automotive history centers on American muscle, a car show running on Michigan Avenue Saturday will showcase an entirely different type of brawn. In its fourth year, Cruisin’ Michigan Avenue is a free, all-day car show that runs from Wayne to Dearborn on Michigan Avenue. The not-for-profit event, which has grown from 4,500 classic cars and hot rods in 2008 to 16,000 last year, combines the area’s rich automotive heritage with charity, organizer Don Nicholson said.  “It’s a great way to be able to give back to the community,” he said. “We do not book any outside vendors unless they’re charities and they’re also in the community.” The event’s growth has boded well for local businesses and tourism, as it has …
