Camp Dearborn Changes Pet Policy for 2013 Season

The campground now offers pet friendly sites from May 24 through Sept. 2.

Camp Dearborn is welcoming pets and their owners to select campgrounds for the 2013 camping season. The camp has designated several "pet friendly" sites on a trial basis from May 24 through Sept. 2. "In the past, we were only allowing pets prior to Memorial Day and after Labor Day, which cost us a lot of business," Kathryn Oldford, office assistant at Camp Dearborn said. "Now people can bring their pets with them all summer long." The new policy applies to sites 121-127, and 154-161 for full hook-up RV access; and electric sites 162-191. Patrons will pay an extra $2 a day to use the pet friendly areas. According to the camp's website, animals must be kept on a leash at all times, and up to date on all vaccinations. Dogs cannot be left …

City Council Approves Budget for Camp Dearborn Golf Course

The course is expected to break even for fiscal year 2013, which ends June 30.

A revenue and expenditure budget for the Mystic Creek Golf Club at Camp Dearborn—which was repossessed by the City of Dearborn in late 2012—was approved by Dearborn City Council Tuesday. It's expected that the golf course will come close to breaking even for fiscal year 2013, which ends June 30. Revenues and expenditures for the course are expected at just under $700,000 each. City officials agreed in October to begin the process to repossess the golf course and banquet center, which has been run by a private company that effectively stopped paying its lease. The city made a deal with owner Jim Dewling and his company, Total Golf, to buy the property and all assets for $900,000—minus anything Dewling owes on the property, including back …

Marie, good points , but no answers. Let the military move the statues, and the Hubbard family can move Hubbard's statue, or leave it, as it is art in itself. Regarding costs, Charging prices to cover costs is a basic in any business, problem is, Dearborn does not care about profit, or covering costs, at least not enough to address the issue. The city's primary income stream is taxes. What do …   more ›

Dearborn to Repossess Mystic Creek Golf Course

The city is planning to present a proposal to current lessee Jim Dewling, who has defaulted on his lease payments.

The city of Dearborn is planning to resume ownership of the Camp Dearborn-attached golf course, Mystic Creek, after learning that current owner Total Golf Inc. has fallen $142,000 behind in lease payments—and doesn't want to pay them until 2015. According to city officials, CEO Jim Dewling made a request to the city asking for a three-year suspension of his lease payments, at which point he would resume payment of previous rent, as well as ongoing payments. Dearborn City Council this week voted to move forward with a counter-proposal which would require Total Golf to turn over the golf course and all assets to the city on Nov. 1 for a sum of $900,000. Money Troubles for Mystic Creek The city indicated that financial troubles with the …

I agree with Mr. Jacobsen and councilman O'Donnell. I would like to see a count of just how many Dearborn residents travel that far to play this course which is NOT a championship course. Dearborn Hills is a beautiful course, has many leagues for Dearborn residents, and seems to be well kept and convenient. All of Camp Dearborn should be sold or turned over to the state. Camp Dearborn is a white …   more ›

This October the weekends of 12-14, 19-21 and 26-28 are reserved for the themed camping weekends. Camp Dearborn Continues Profits, But Future Unclear for City's Recreational Site

A feasibility study on the camp requested in March is likely to be completed in October.

As the summer comes to a close, the City of Dearborn is taking a look at the status of use for its newly built resort-style cabins, and the outlook for their locale, Camp Dearborn. The cabins saw 84.38 percent occupancy during the peak season—Memorial Day through Labor Day—which was above set goals, said Recreation and Parks Director Greg Orner. “We budgeted for an 80 percent occupancy,” Orner said, “so we’re ahead of schedule.” Preliminary numbers for fiscal year 2012, which ended June 30, show that the camp overall will give back $125,000 in funds to the city over expenses. The department is on target to pay back the $310,000 in general funding used to fund construction of the cabins; however, there’s no word on whether more will be …

$269K Grant Will Help Fund Camp Dearborn Connection Trail

The State of Michigan grant will be matched by $115,000 in funding from the City of Dearborn.

Gov. Rick Snyder this month approved a $268,900 grant to develop a trail between Camp Dearborn and the Milford Recreation Trail, the state announced. The development is part of $38 million in Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grants to support 99 recreation and land acquisition projects throughout the state. It also includes further improvements to the Kensington Metropark, as well as trail developments in Grand Traverse County. For the Camp Dearborn project, the grant requires a funding match of $115,000 from the city of Dearborn, which is around 30 percent of the whole project's projected costs. The project would result in a multi-use path that would connect the Milford Trail on General Motors Road to Camp Dearborn. The path would …

The Walk to Camp Dearborn: Then and Now

How did the legendary Camp Dearborn walk come to be – and could it be recreated?

It was a hot summer day in 1962. A group of teenage friends from the now abandoned St. Alphonsus school in Dearborn were hanging out, talking about their big plans for the weekend. In those days, the social Mecca of Dearborn in the summer was undoubtedly Camp Dearborn. It was the place to spend the summer for Dearbornites both young and old. It was the social gathering spot for teens and in-betweens to awkwardly and excitedly mingle with the opposite sex at the still legendary Canteen dance. Joe McCracken had been hearing from his friends all day about his busted up old car. “That beat up thing will never make it to camp! You’d be better off walking!” his friends derided. Defiantly, and unhesitatingly Joe replied, “Then I WILL walk to camp…

Reservations Book Quickly for Camp Dearborn's New Cabins

A grand opening ceremony for the facility's newest addition will be held June 16.

Camp Dearborn has come a long way from the days of Tent Village. Originally opened in 1948, the city-owned recreation facility in Milford is turning a new corner in camping. Reservations opened June 4 for eight resort-style cabins, which feature a full bathroom, electricity, beds for six, and an outdoor cooking area with a microwave, refridgerator and electric cooktop. The cabins–which cost the Dearborn Recreation Department more than $310,000 to construct–are booking up fast, according to department Director Greg Orner. "Thirty percent of the available inventory was booked on the first day," said Orner. At this time, camp is only booking the cabins for week-long stays, which run $660 for seven nights. If the cabins are not booked, they …

$110 per night? Let's see, at that same rate of a close by hotel, that rate (or possibly less) would get me free Coffee, free breakfast *for everyone in the room mind you*, housekeeping, free parking, wifi, air conditioning, shower, Does the City of Dearborn want to truly rent out these roofified cabana's or not? The cost needs to be re-addressed. As a closing comment, the cost of building those …   more ›
