Zaineb Jabber uses tact and training to be successful as one of only a handful of peer mediators at Becker Elementary.
Name: Zaineb Jabber Age: 11 School: Becker Elementary School Accomplishment: The term “mediation” often comes up in adult situations, like legal or labor disputes. But at Becker Elementary, mediation has taken on a similar role, and fourth grader Zaineb Jabber is one of only a few students that intervene in classroom conflicts as a peer mediator. It’s a role Jabber calls a useful way to solve conflicts that inevitably come up among young people in and out of the classroom. “I like helping the other students,” she said. “(Mediation) is a way that we can solve our problems at school that is respectful.” Jabber and other peer mediators were hand-picked for their positions, and were specifically trained in mediation techniques for two days. …

This fourth-grader helps other students master the skill of math and the art of English usage.
Name: Malak Mchaimezh Age: 9 School: Becker Elementary School Accomplishment: For fourth-grader Malak Mchaimezh, helping out other students who are having trouble learning crucial math and English skills is second nature. Mchaimezh, a student at Becker Elementary, has become a self-proclaimed tutor at the school. “I help other students with math problems,” said Mchaimezh. “I also help the teacher translate–we have some students that are new (to the United States). I like to translate the words for them.” At Becker, many of the students are first-generation immigrants and must undergo a learning curve to master several subjects, at least initially, until they become more proficient in English. When the doors of Dearborn’s schools opened Wednesday morning, students and teachers focused on learning, fun, and starting off the year productively.
When the big doors swung open at Dearborn High School on Outer Drive around 7 a.m. Wednesday, a jam-packed intersection was just the beginning of what promises to be an interesting year. “My goal is to pass my classes,” said Sonia Abdallah, a 16-year-old senior experiencing back to school for the last time. “It does make me a little sad that this is my last year (at school).” Fatme Taleb, 17, also a senior, echoed Abdallah’s sentiments as they caught up with friends before the bell rang. “I’m hoping to do well in my classes,” she said.
