History, Future Converge at Dearborn Train Station Groundbreaking Ceremony

City and state leaders gathered at Greenfield Village Tuesday to celebrate the start of construction of Dearborn's new Intermodal Passenger Rail Station.

There was some looking ahead, and much more looking forward at the groundbreaking ceremony for Dearborn's Intermodal Passenger Rail Station, held Tuesday on the grounds of Greenfield Village. Though the actual breaking of ground already began in March with utility work, construction starts this month on the $28.2 million station, which is expected to be completed by the fall of 2013. Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly hailed the new train station as a continuation of the city's commitment to innovative transportation initiatives. "Dearborn has hosted a train station from the beginning," he said. "This is the next generation of that." Fittingly, The Henry Ford hosted the groundbreaking, marking their partnership with the train station, which will…

Final Touches Put on Train Station Plan in Preparation for Construction Start

The first stages of construction are expected to begin in late February, with an expected completion date of 2013.

With the last pieces of the Dearborn Intermodal Passenger Rail Station put into place, the city of Dearborn is readying for the start of construction–which could come as soon as the end of February. Awarded a $28.2 million Federal Rail Administration Act grant in August, the city was given two years from that date to complete the project. In December, the City Plan Commission approved the land use plan for the station; on Jan. 24, City Council approved the city's purchase of the eight-acre site from Ford Land for $2.05 million, $115,000 of which will come from the general fund. The parcel of land is located on the south side of Michigan Avenue, just east of west downtown Dearborn. Economic and Community Development Director Barry Murray …

Train, Rail Projects Could Be Finalized This Week

Dearborn's federally-funded light rail and train station will move ahead–sources say–despite difficult Washington headwinds.

It could be full-speed ahead for the new Intermodal Passenger Rail Facility planned for Michigan Avenue and the expanded service it will provide, despite calls for fiscal conservatism and austerity in Washington, D.C. Therese Cody, the rail operations project manager for the Michigan Department of Transportation, said she believes the red tape related to the $28.2 million Federal Rail Administration Act grant that will fund a new train station could be cleared as early as the end of this week, which will allow construction to begin. “We expect that funds will be obligated this month, and it could happen this week,” Cody told Patch on Monday. “Once that happens, everything will be in line for the project to be completed. Barry Murray, the …

Thanks everyone for caring enough about Dearborn to take the time to post to this site. I think a number of city officials read this stuff, so what we say here can make a difference. This new station, I believe, will be a great development for Dearborn--if and only if it is done right. Yes, make sure there is enough free parking, like there is at the current station. A new "first class" …   more ›

Dearborn Train Station Construction to Move Forward

City council approves several resolutions Monday night relating to the building of Deaborn's new train station.

Several resolutions were passed at Monday night's Dearborn City Council meeting moving things forward with Dearborn's Intermodal Passenger Rail Facility. Effective at the meeting, Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly is authorized to finalize and execute an agreement between the Michigan Department of Transportation and the city–as well as the city and Amtrak–for the final design and construction of the station. Also relating to the train station, two-year contracts were awarded for matters relating to construction of the facility. The first, for $1,726,300, was awarded to Tooles-Clark for construction management of risk services. The second, for $1,929,312, was awarded to Neumann Smith for architectural and engineering services. The $28.2-million…

Dearborn Taxpayer

Concerned Citizen - I appreciate your perspective and optimism. But keep in mind the "feds" are broke and essentially insolvent (they have to borrow 40 cents of every dollar they spend to fund projects like this). Amtrak is hugely inefficient and requires billions of dollars of taxpayer subsidies to provide the service they provide to the few customers who use it. I also remember this same …   more ›
