Dearborn Shelter Pushes to Find Homes for Overabundance of Animals

The shelter is currently caring for more than 370 animals, including many in temporary foster homes.

With the noticeable arrival of summer in southeast Michigan, warmer temperatures have also meant an overflowing number of homeless animals coming through the doors of the Dearborn Animal Shelter. The shelter is currently caring for more than 370 animals, many of them temporarily housed in foster homes. As the facility reaches the limits of its capacity, the shelter is offering special adoption fees and efforts through July 31. In this two week window, cat adoption fees will be reduced to $5 per cat (4 months and older) and kittens will be two for one, so the cost will be $55 to adopt two kittens. Additionally, the shelter is extending a “Test Drive the Love” campaign, where adopters have two weeks to become acclimated to a new pet family …

Animal Shelter: Two Kittens for the Price of One

For $55, residents can bring home two cats that have been sterilized and vaccinated.

For a limited time only, the Dearborn Animal Shelter is offering a two-for-one deal for a special cat. The shelter is offering residents a chance to adopt Chi Chi, described by the shelter as "a lovable tyke with a short balck-and-white cat." For $55, residents can adopt this 13-week old "tuxedo cat" and walk out with a second cat for no additional cost, the shelter said. That $55, however, includes much more than just the two cats. Sterilization, a microchip and vaccinations are also included for no additional costs.

Find a Lot to Love in Petite, Sweet Sarina

This Dearborn Animal Shelter cat is available for adoption.

Sarina is about the sweetest cat you'll ever meet. She is still a smaller cat, with subdued brown mackeral tabby markings. Sarina is about one year old, and is available for adoption right now from the Dearborn Animal Shelter. Sarina is just one of many cats and kittens up for adoption right now at the shelter, which means you can get her or any other adult cat for a reduced rate of $25 as the shelter attempts to thin out its cat population. June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, so why not stop by the Dearborn Animal Shelter and meet a new companion? To learn more about Sarina, check out her PetFinder profile here. Farmington Hills Woman: Tucker Cipriano 'Went Off the Deep End' After Birth Mom's Death

Christine Frederick says the teen accused in Monday's brutal attack on his family lived with her for several months last fall.

After the emotional arraignment today of Tucker Cipriano, 19, and Mitchell Young, 20, who are facing charges in the beating death of Tucker's father, Bob, and attacks on his mother, Rose, and brother Salvatore, a Farmington Hills woman is pointing to Tucker's adoption and alleged drug use as possible triggers for his troubles.  Outside the courtroom, Christine Frederick said Tucker spent several months with her last fall, while she recovered from brain surgery. She said she often takes in young people who have nowhere else to go, and he heard about her through friends.  Tucker was on the right path, Frederick said, and didn't leave her house "because he didn't want to be around any bad influences." "Tucker's real mom just died and that's …

I used to live near this woman. She is a lunatic. Everything she is saying is a complete lie. She takes in these children to use them for all the money and government benefits she can. And while she "takes" care of these delinquents, she ends up wrapping them up in her pit-hole of a life. She deserves jail time and to be taught a severe lesson for giving or aiding in drug usage.   more ›

VIDEO: Dearborn Animal Shelter in Urgent Need of Kitten Adopters

The shelter is currently at capacity, and will be holding several events this weekend in an effort to adopt out cats and kittens.

While it might seem like a great thing to see new kittens every day, for the Dearborn Animal Shelter, it has meant a particularly stressful season. Currently, the shelter is at capacity with its space for cat and kittens, as well as foster homes. Shelter spokeswoman Sandra Boulton said that new stray cats are being dropped off daily, and the shelter is in urgent need of new adopters. The shelter will be hosting off-site adoptions from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Dearborn and Livonia Pet Supplies Plus locations. The Dearborn Pet Supplies Plus is located at 2621 South Telegraph Road. The Livonia store is located at 29489 Seven Mile Road. Pretty Tortie Kitten Needs a Place to Grow Up

Alayna is currently available for adoption from the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

Just old enough to go home with an adopter for a reduced fee of $25, but still young enough to be a playful kitten, Alayna is a 5-month-old beauty looking for a home. This young, long-haired tortoiseshell kitty is currently available for adoption from the Dearborn Animal Shelter. She's a real sweetheart and a uniquely beautiful cat. The best part? You can have twice the love for the same price when you take home her sister–and near twin–Leana. The two-for-one deal on cat adoptions has been extended through the end of September, with already-discounted rates of $55 for kittens and $25 for cats. To learn more about Alayna, view her Petfinder profile here. The adoption fee for an adult cat such as Alayna is normally $80, but has been lowered …

Ms. Bella the Husky is as Beautiful as Her Name Implies

This 3-year-old Husky is available for adoption from the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

They don't call her Ms. Bella because she's a Twilight fan. This 3-year-old Husky, currently available for adoption from the Dearborn Animal Shelter, is so named because with one look at her, "beautiful" is the only word that comes to mind. Bella likes to go for walks, and is somewhat excitable. She did well on temperament testing, but because she has a tendency to guard her chew toys and put her mouth on hands, she may do best in a home with no children under age 12. Also, because of her breed, Bella would do best in a home without cats.  View Bella's Petfinder profile here. The adoption fee for a large adult dog such as Bella is $140. Adoption fees include a basic medical exam, behavior assessment, age-appropriate vaccinations, parasite …

Dearborn Animal Shelter Offering Canine Adoption Discount This Dog-ust

This week only, the shelter has drastically lowered its adoption fees for dogs.

This week, potential adopters can get a doggone good deal on an adoptable puppy or dog at the Dearborn Animal Shelter. In celebration of the month of Dog-ust, the shelter is running a special on dog adoption fees through Saturday, Aug. 13. All available dogs can be taken home for a $50 adoption fee. In some cases, that's a savings of almost $200 from normal fees. Recent discounts have been due to the unexpectedly large number of animals being brought into the shelter this spring and summer, the shelter recently explained. A special on cat adoptions is also running this month. One option on the canine end is Russell, a handsome mastiff-Labrador retriever mix. Only 18 months old, this big guy came to the Dearborn Animal Shelter as a stray …

The Dearborn Animal Shelter has more cats than you can shake a stick at. Take one (or two) home for a low price this summer.

The Dearborn Animal Shelter is still in need of adopters, and one of those is a pretty dilute tortoiseshell named Amelia. Amelia is full grown, but young, and has a medium-length, shiny coat and a cute face. She's just one of hundreds of cats and kittens currently available for adoption from the shelter. And through the end of August, adopters can take home two cats for the price of one at an already-discounted rate of $55 for kittens and $25 for cats. To learn more about Amelia, view her Petfinder profile here. The adoption fee for an adult cat such as Amelia is normally $80, but has been lowered to $25 to help reduce the large number of cats and kittens at the shelter.
