The Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic will run Aug. 29-31 at Wayne State University.
Dearborn High School will open its football season for a second time against Chippewa Valley High School at the Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University this August, the commission announced Monday. Additionally Fordson High School will make their debut at the tournament against Macomb Dakota. Formerly known as the Big Day Prep Showdown, the Prep Kickoff Classic will be held at Tom Adams Field on the campus of Wayne State Aug. 29-31. The Muskegon native is among two Red Wings set to appear at six Metro Detroit Meijer locations this season.
Red Wings fans can meet one of the team's star players Tuesday in Allen Park. Detroit Red Wings forwards Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm are set to appear at various Meijer locations throughout the Metro Detroit area during the 2012-13 season, signing autographs and interacting with fans at six different Metro Detroit Meijer locations. Abdelkader, a Muskegon native and former Michigan State Spartan, kicked off the season-long campaign on Monday with a stop at the Canton store. On Tuesday, he'll be at the Meijer in Allen Park from 6-7 p.m. The store is located at the Fairlane Green at 3565 Fairlane Boulevard. Wednesday was National Signing Day for high school senior athletes across the country.
When Ali Jawad was a freshman at Dearborn High School, he met a senior soccer player named Soony Saad who inspired him to become more serious about the sport. Saad and his brother, Hamoody, both went on from DHS to attend the University of Michigan and play on the school's soccer team. And now, like his idol, Jawad is heading to UM, too. "It's kind of a legacy, but it's a great school as well," said Jawad of his plans to head to Ann Arbor in the fall. "It's exciting, and to follow their path is something I've wanted to do since freshman year." Jawad was one of four DHS student-athletes to sign a letter of intent to play for and attend a college. Of 120 finalists, 32 will be chosen to win a $1,000 scholarship.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced finalists for the 2012-2013 Scholar-Athlete Award Friday, and one Dearborn High School student made the cut. Lara Fawaz, a senior who plays basketball and tennis for the Pioneers, was named a finalist in the annual competition. Of the 120 finalists announced today, 32 will be chosen to receive the $1,000 scholarships. Award winners are chosen based on a combination of athletic and academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale), and previously have won a varsity letter in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament. Hockey season is finally here, but Dearborn-area fans are split on whether or not they'll be going to a game this season.
With the NHL lockout officially over, the Detroit Red Wings have announced their 2013 schedule. The Wings will play 48 games in 99 days as Detroit looks to extend its 21-season playoff streak, the longest current streak in professional sports. The Michigan High School Athletic Association and PlayOn! Sports are kicking off a new winter sports initiative on Comcast, including a Dearborn girls' basketball game.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association and PlayOn! Sports are making it easier to catch a high school sporting event by airing 17 winter events on Comcast—including an Edsel Ford High School girls' basketball game. The game, against rivals Redford Thurston, will air on Jan. 22 at 7 and 9:30 p.m., with additional replays throughout the following week. Xfinity subscribers can also watch the games online at Xfinity.com/HighSchoolSports. Highlights will also be available on the Xfinity On Demand service. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans and is ready to highlight the best student cheering sections across Michigan. The annual basketball tournament is held to raise funds for the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Edsel Ford High School hosted the annual Guido Showcase on Wednesday. The annual Dearborn-based tournament raises funds for the Karmanos Cancer Institute. in memory of former Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2006. Basketball teams from Dearborn High, Fordson High, Edsel Ford and Divine Child competed against other area schools in the tournament. The showcase is usually held over two days during the district's winter break, but was condensed to one. According to the Detroit Free Press, Ali Farhat—playing with the Pioneers—was the stand-out player of the day.
