Dearborn Students Named in WXYZ Channel 7's 'Brightest & Best' List

Students were recognized for their overall academic and extracurricular achievements in high school.

Four Dearborn high school students have been named to the 2013 "Brightest & Best" list of students in the Detroit Metro area. The students are Lara Fawaz of Dearborn High School, Jennifer Cimino of Divine Child High School, Ali Elreichouni of Fordson High School, and Matthew Krawczyk of the Henry Ford Academy. Each year, Channel 7 hosts a special event at WXYZ-TV and invites more than 250 honorees and their families to attend. The station teamed up with Gardner-White Furniture again this year to present the awards. This year, the honorees participated in a Twitter scavenger hunt on May 11.

O.L. Smith Middle School Students Suspended for Fighting

Two Dearborn teachers received minor injuries during a fight that took place on May 8 at the school.

Six middle school students at O.L. Smith Middle School in Dearborn have been suspended from the district for 10 days pending a formal hearing, the district said on Monday. According to David Mustonen, communications coordinator for Dearborn Public Schools, five females and one male student were suspended for fighting on school property May 8. Mustonen said two teachers, who attempted to break up the fight, were treated for minor injuries. "The altercation stemmed from a teen middle school problem that started outside of school," Mustonen said. "All of the individuals live in close proximity to each other, and the whole scenario played out culminating with a fight on school property." Mustonen said district officials will continue to …

I think parents really need to start paying attention to what these kids put on social media. I read my son's. He knows I do. I also read the ones of the people he's friends with. When I see something inappropriate (ie could be bullying) I tell him that it's just wrong. Unfortunately I mostly see it from girls. Edsel Ford High School Principal Will Not Meet with Terry Jones

The Gainesville pastor plans to attend the Arab International Festival in Dearborn in June.

Officials at Dearborn Public Schools said there are no plans to meet with Pastor Terry Jones next month, when Jones returns to Dearborn for the Arab International Festival. Jones announced on his website on May 9 that he will meet with Scott Casebolt, principal of Edsel Ford High School, to discuss his concerns about Muslim students bullying non-Muslim students at the school. Jones traveled to Edsel Ford in October 2012 to protest what he calls “aggressive bullying by gangs of Muslim youths” in public places, including schools. Dearborn Schools Recognized in Michigan Green School Program

The district was honored for improving ecological practices and teaching educational stewardship of Michigan's land and waterways.

Community Choice Credit Union Awards Scholarships to Dearborn Students

The local credit union awarded $100,000 in scholarships to students who will attend a university or college in Michigan.

Four Dearborn-area students were among the 20 recepients of $100,000 in college scholarships awarded by the Community Choice Credit Union Foundation on May 9. The credit union presented students across southeast Michigan with the scholarships at a special ceremony with state legislators and school officials earlier this week. Recepients included: Mohamed Hussein Ghandour of Fordson High School in Dearborn; Nadeen Dakhlallah of Dearborn High School; Zied Shammout of Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights; and Nor Shammout of Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights. “Five years ago, Community Choice Credit Union launched the Community Choice Foundation. Should Schools Stop Requiring Foreign Language Classes?

Currently, Dearborn Public Schools require students to take foreign language for two years.

Hoping to free up more options for students when it comes to high school electives, the Michigan House Education Committee approved two bills in Lansing on Tuesday that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for graduation. Dearborn Public Schools currently follow the Michigan Merit Curriculum guidelines that require students to take two years of a foreign language. The district offers classes in French, Spanish, Arabic, German, Mandarin Chinese, and American Sign Language. According to Dr. Gail Shenkman, associate superintendent for secondary education at DPS, students can complete the foreign language requirement by enrolling in two years of classroom instruction at the high school level; testing out of a foreign language; or …

I think the foreign language requirement is one of the most important requirement for many reasons including job options, marketplace competation and, maybe most importantly, diplomacy at home and abroad. I only wish it were a requirement starting in kindergarten when children are the most apt to absorb it.   more ›

Dearborn High School Student Films Debut Today

The DHS films "Becoming Charlie" and "Winnerman" will be screened at 7 p.m. in the Michael A. Guido Theater.

Dearborn High School students will debut two feature films today at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. The films were developed in the DHS student video program under the direction of teacher Kurt Doelle. This year's films include Becoming Charlie, a drama based on the true story of a Dearborn High student (and WDHS alumni) who lost his parents, and had to fight to gain stability for himself and his sibling. Winnerman is a comedy that tackles the subject of bullying, where a high school football player risks his popularity to help a "nerdy" friend from bullies—a one-time job that turns him into an anti-bullying superhero. Henry Ford College Graduates 1,900 Students in May Commencement

State Sen. Morris Hood and Rep. Harvey Santana were honored for their service to Dearborn during the college's commencement on May 4.

Henry Ford Community College's (HFCC) 2013 commencement ceremony took place May 4, as the college celebrated the accomplishments of graduating students at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn. “Young Fives” Program Coming to Dearborn Public Schools

The program is open to students who are age-eligible for kindergarten, and require additional time to develop cognitive or academic skills.

Dearborn Public Schools will offer a new "Young Fives" program beginning in the 2013-2014 school year. The program is designed for students who are age-eligible for kindergarten, and require additional time to develop their emotional, social, physical, and cognitive or academic skills. Children attend five full days per week, follow the Dearborn Public Schools calendar, and participate in all activities at Lindbergh Elementary, 500 N. Waverly St. The Young Fives program is part of the K-12 state funded public school program. There are no fees or tuition. Dearborn High School Students Collect Donations for Boston Marathon Bombing Victims

Students in the high school's Business Professionals of America club will collect donations through Friday.

A fundraising effort is underway at Dearborn High School to raise money for the victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings. Students in the DHS Business Professionals of America club organized the donation drive by selling popcorn, ice cream, and bagels to students and staff at the school this week. "The idea for the fundraiser came from how close the incident touched our school since one of our teachers was part of the run that day," club adviser Robert Yoder said. The Business Professionals of America prepares students for the world of business, Yoder explained. Dearborn students compete against other schools in more than 62 events at the regional, state, and national level during the school year. Yoder said the club is …
