Area businesses and fire departments across southeast Michigan are rallying together to help the family of Brian Woehlke, a 29-year-old Dearborn resident who died in the line of duty on May 8. Woehlke, the Wayne-Westland firefighter who died when a roof collapsed during a strip mall blaze in Westland, leaves behind Jennifer, his wife of four years, and his 13-month-old daughter Ava. A trust fund has been established for Ava Woehlke. The public can contribute, by mailing checks to the Westland Firefighters Charity, PO Box 851320, Westland, Michigan 48185. A funeral for Westland firefighter Brian Woehlke will be held at 11 a.m. at Divine Child Church in Dearborn on May 13. Woehlke, 29, of Dearborn died while battling a fire at a strip mall in Westland on March 8. A viewing will be held at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 34567 Michigan Ave., in Wayne. The viewing will be open to the public on Saturday, May 11 from 4 to 9 p.m. There will be a formal firefighter walk thru at 6 p.m. A second viewing will take place on May 12 from 2 to 9 p.m. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. at Divine Child Church, 25001 Herbert Weier Drive. According to Crime Mapping.com, break-ins occurred on S. Lafayette St. and Rockford and S. Claremont streets since May 1.
Detectives at the Dearborn Police Department said Thursday that they are investigating a string of vehicle break-ins over the past few weeks. According to Crime Mapping.com, police responded to a vehicle break-in at Rockford and S. Claremont streets on May 6. Parts and accessories were stolen from the vehicle. A second larceny took place in the 5000 block of Schaefer at 3:44 p.m. on May 6. Two break-ins also occurred in the 400 block of S. Lafayette Street at 4 a.m. May 7, and at 10 p.m. May 6, police said. On May 8, officers responded to the 400 block of N. Franklin St. for a larceny complaint as well. Brian Woehlke, 29, was fighting a fire at a Westland shopping center on Wednesday morning.
A Dearborn resident who worked as a Wayne-Westland firefighter died in a fire at a strip mall in Westland on Wednesday, according to the Observer and Eccentric. Brian Woehlke, 29, went missing in the fire at about 9:30 a.m., according to Click on Detroit. His body was later found in the debris of the two businesses, Electric Stick and Marvaso's Italian Grill, at the strip mall on North Wayne Road. Woehlke was a husband and father. He had been a member of the Westland-Wayne Fire Department for 10 months, and he is the first firefighter to die in the line of duty in the department’s 47-year history. Residents of the Duvall-Edison Neighborhood Association in Dearborn are working with the Dearborn Police Department to revive a Neighborhood Watch program in their community. An informational meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. May 8 in the cafeteria at Duvall Elementary School. Interested families can meet with Officer Dan Bartok, who will provide an overview of crime prevention tips, crime reporting, and how to sustain an active Neighborhood Watch program. Dearborn police officers are investigating a mysterious fire that occurred at Dearborn High School on May 5. According to police reports, officers were dispatched to the school around 12:56 a.m. after 911 operators received a phone call that a high jump landing pad was on fire. Upon arrival, officers determined that an unknown suspect or suspects purposely set the landing pad on fire. Officers located fresh graffiti written in chalk on the cement near the pad. One phrase read "MOE," and another phrase read "Oliver, hey guys," police said. Police discovered a trail east of the graffiti leading to the main burn site. Officers said the trail appeared to be made with an accelerant and had been burnt into the high school's outdoor track. After …

A 16-year-old student from Fordson High School in Dearborn was assaulted by unknown individuals while he was walking home from school on May 2, police said. According to the Dearborn Police Department, the student was walking near Hemlock and Schaefer streets with his uncle around 3:50 p.m. when he was approached by four black males who started punching and kicking him. The student told police he did not know the suspects and did not know why he was attacked. No items were taken from the student during the assault, police said. The case is under investigation. No suspect information was available at the time of this posting.
Thirty-two students from Dearborn Public Schools received an overview of the criminal justice system for two weeks.
The Dearborn Police Department held its third annual graduation ceremony for the Police Youth Academy on May 4. Thirty-two students from Dearborn Public Schools attended two sessions on consecutive Saturdays and learned a brief history of the department and its mission, an overview of the criminal justice system and the value of continuing education. "The Youth Academy gives students a tremendous opportunity to better themselves as citizens by promoting civic duty and responsibility," Haddad said. A 74-year-old Lincoln Park woman is being questioned by Dearborn Police for driving the wrong way on the Southfield Freeway on April 29. According to police reports, the woman was driving a 2008 Mercury Sable north in the southbound lane of the freeway between Rotunda Drive and Oakwood Boulevard at about noon, when she struck another vehicle. Police said two other vehicles were involved in the accident after they crashed while attempting to avoid the woman. The accident caused police to shut down the freeway for several hours in order to clean up vehicle debris. Three of the four drivers, including the woman, were taken to Oakwood Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Police said the woman has not been formally charged with a crime …
