Grab Your Chili Boots: Dearborn Firefighters Cook-Off Set for Weekend

Here's a look at five weekend events in the Dearborn area.

The weekend is two days away. As you debate how to spend time as a family, check out these events going on around Dearborn.

1. Dearborn Heights Firefighters Chili Cook-Off

The Dearborn Heights Firefighters 21st annual Chili Cook-Off will take place Saturday, Aug. 17 at Parkland Park (Ann Arbor Trail at Parkland Street) from noon to dusk. The event will include music, food and beverages, kids' games, prizes, raffles, face painting, a moonwalk and more. Proceeds will benefit the Great Lakes Burn Camp.

2. Dearborn Animal Shelter Adopt-a-Thon

The Dearborn Animal Shelter's Adopt-a-Thon will take place at Westborn Mall in Dearborn on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come see the available kittens, cats and dogs. Up to 80 animals will be available for attendees to meet and adopt.

3. Staples Teacher Appreciation Day

Teachers can shop at Staples in Dearborn on Saturday during a special celebration just for teacher rewards members. The first 100 teachers will receive a free shopping bag and get 20 percent back in Staples Rewards on all the supplies they can fit in the bag. Staples is located at 23131 Michigan Ave.

4. Back to School Health Fair 

Each year, more and more students die from sudden cardiac arrest due to undetected abnormal heart structure or abnormal heart rhythms. To help young people and their families have peace of mind, we are offering young people, ages 13-18, the opportunity to have their hearts and vascular system evaluated by a team of specialists during ACCESS' Back-2-School Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the ACCESS Community Clinic, 6450 Maple St. in Dearborn.

5. Woodward Dream Cruise

The annual Woodward Dream Cruise is dubbed as the world’s largest one-day classic car event – spanning nine communities along Woodward Avenue. For information, visit http://www.woodwarddreamcruise.com/. The cruise takes place on Friday and Saturday.
