A game of football this Saturday in Dearborn will help special needs youth live out their athletic dreams, too.
Local football league the Detroit Downriver Diesels will take on the Flint Fury on Saturday, July 14, at . Proceeds from the game will benefit the Dearborn chapter of the Special Olympics.
The game begins at 6:30 p.m. on Edsel Ford's football field. Tickets are $7.
The Diesels are known for hosting fundraiser games for local causes. In June, they raised funds and awareness for the . Last year, the Diesels took on the Battle Creek Blaze for a Special Olympics fundraiser.
Revived in 2005, the Dearborn Special Olympics is made up of nearly 40 participants from Dearborn, Dearborn Heights and Allen Park. The group meets several times weekly at to learn a variety of sports, including basketball, baseball, bowling, track and field and even snowshoeing.
Funds raised in support of the group–which is entirely volunteer-run–go toward purchase of uniforms, sports equipment and costs of competition in various Special Olympics events in Michigan.
