Dearborn Students Start Beggin' for Bones

With a party and award on the line, this annual fall fundraiser invites local students to get creative in raising money for the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

For some Dearborn students, October isn't just a time for candy and costumes.

The classes, groups, scout troops and individuals participating in Beggin' for Bones also spend the month thinking about animals in need at the .

Beggin' for Bones is a monthlong fundraiser that encourages youth and adults alike to get in the Halloween spirit by trick-or-treating for animals. Participants collect funds in decorated canisters, and by holding fundraising events throughout the month.

Though the program is mainly for school groups, anyone is allowed to participate.

Whichever school group raises the most funds will receive the coveted Golden Bone Award, as well as a party for up to 30 people, and their winning photo in Dearborn Patch.

According to the Dearborn Animal Shelter, last year more than 200 individuals in and around Dearborn participated in the Beggin’ for Bones and raised more than $1,600. Student involvement came from , , and . The Edsel Ford National Honor Society won the top prize and raised more than $450.

Though Beggin' for Bones has already begun, those interested in taking part in the fundraiser can contact Andrea Kuentz in the shelter's development office at 313-943-2697, or via email at akuentz@dearbornanimals.org. Canisters can be delivered to a school, home or club, and money must be turned in by Nov. 7 to the shelter, which is located at 2661 Greenfield Road.
