Dearborn Leaders to Get Pied for a Cause at Relay for Life This Saturday

Four Pies and a Poncho will pit Mayor Jack O'Reilly and others against each other to see who "wins" the honor of having pies thrown at them.

Several big names in Dearborn could be taking a pie to the face this Saturday in support of raising funds to cure cancer.

Team Dearborn–which is participating in Relay for Life from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday at the and hopes to raise $25,000–will be hosting a special fundraiser called "Four Pies and a Poncho."

The fundraiser involves five contestants: Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly, Dearborn Public Schools Supt. Brian Whiston, Wayne County Commissioner Gary Woronchak, Dearborn Firefighters Burn Drive Chairman Steve Worden and Principal Chuck Baughman.

People can "vote" with donations to the American Cancer Society and the contestant with the most donations in his name wins the poncho. The person wearing the poncho will be the focus of some good-natured pie throwing by the other four contestants, each of who wins one pie.

Supporters who want to protect their favorite community figure from being in the poncho spot should vote for any of the other contestants.

Voting will close at 5 p.m. May 12 and the “pieing” will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Relay.

“We weren’t sure this would come together, but we’re excited and extremely grateful to our city leaders for being good sports for such a great cause," said Team Dearborn Co-Captain Debbie Malyn. "We hope this will bring a smile to the face of our community and raise awareness and much needed funds for the American Cancer Society through the Relay For Life of Dearborn."

Team Dearborn is working together with the Dearborn High Key Club Relay Team to publicize the fundraiser and gather donations.
