Dearborn Public Library's Summer Reading Program Begins June 17

Children, teens and adults can participate in a variety of fun reading programs during the summer at three Dearborn libraries.

Dearborn residents of all ages are invited to participate in the Dearborn Public Library’s 2013 Summer Reading program, which kicks-off on June 17.

Four programs will be offered this year—"Read to Me" (for children ages infant to kindergarten), "Dig into Reading" (first through fifth grade), "Beneath the Surface" (sixth to 12th grade), and "Groundbreaking Reads" (18 to adult).

Children will receive a free book for participating. All adult and teen participants will also be entered into a grand prize drawing for a Barnes & Noble Nook HD tablet.

Again this year, online reading logs will be available, making it convenient for busy families to participate. Program participants need a library card to register and log information online. It is possible to register the whole family for summer reading using one library card.

New in 2013, the summer reading program will be community-based. Participants are encouraged to log hours read per week and the number of community events attended each week. Participants who log at least one hour or one event each week will also be entered into weekly prize drawings throughout the summer reading program.

In addition, there will be many programs to reflect the 2013 summer reading themes: a dinosaur dig for all ages and a "Mustache Bash" for teens. Also, starting June 17, there will be a children’s movie at 2 p.m. every Monday, and children’s crafts every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Younger children will enjoy storytimes for ages 2-6 on Thursdays and for ages 6-24 months on Fridays.

Also, adults can participate in a special series of lectures during “Brown Bag Inspirations” at noon on Wednesdays throughout the summer. Bring a lunch and listen to speakers on topics as varied as how to start your own business, life in the Peace Corps, and horsepacking. There’s bound to be something of interest to everyone.

The 2013 reading program ends Aug. 2.
