Semi-Pro Football Comes to Dearborn

The Detroit Diesels battled the Michigan Vikings in the Eastern Conference Championship Game of the Great Lakes Football League playoffs Saturday.

Dearborn got a late summer taste of football Saturday when the Detroit Diesels and the Michigan Vikings faced off at in the Eastern Conference Championship of the Great Lakes Football League.

The 10-team semi-professional league, formed in 2007, is full contact and includes squads from Michigan and Ohio.

On Saturday, the Vikings led the Diesels, 14-7, with about a minute to go in the first half when severe weather struck. Officials postponed the game once they saw lightning.

There is no official word on when the game will be resumed, according to both teams' websites.

The leagues playoff season is scheduled to begin Aug. 20, but there's no word on whether that will be postponed, either.

The Detroit Diesels, which includes many players from Dearborn, have enjoyed a successful season. Their record currently stands at seven wins and four losses, including nonleague games.
